I'm not sure why you say it has nothing to do with the forum. This is a documented problem over at vBulletin.com, who produces the forum software. The fix is outlined there.

My software setup has not changed from the first zip I uploaded many months ago (which was downloaded 600+ times without any problems), and the zip I recently uploaded (which many, many people are having trouble with).

Yes it would work with a different browser. As I already stated, and as outlined on vBulletin.com, this is a known problem with vBulletin and Internet Explorer.

Uhh, documented problem?

You guys came across a forum post made by a guy not related to vBulletin whatsoever with a total of 9 posts, who happened to post his problem to their public forums and received no replies. Besides, he even says himself that this is entirely the fault of his browser...

Except it was only IE that was giving me the problem.

And exactly explains what I've told you...

MIME Type was set to this
Content-type: application/zip

Edited to the following
Content-type: unknown/zip

Hence, Internet Explorer, which likes to handle files in a very precarious way, will corrupt files downloaded under this kind of heading. Programs that also use MIME headers to read files will probably misread .Zip's unless this is corrected.

Remember, I haven't had a single error with any of the .Zip files posted. So either my computer is broken and makes it work, or you're having software issues like this, which can be common if you've installed/removed/upgraded different .Zip handling programs that meddle with these settings.

That or do this.

Open notepad, paste this...

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Mime\Database\Content Type\application/x-zip-compressed]
"Extension"=".zip"

Then save it as "zip.reg" (WITH the quotations) and run it. Maybe it'll override IE's handler for you.

<sigh>

600+ people opened my zip a few months ago. Now I'm innudated with PM's and posts that nobody can open my zip (it's NOT just me). Obviously something has changed.

I'm not sure why you guys are being so negative about this...? All I was doing was looking for some help for all the folks who wanted to download my file.

As for the others who offered help - thanks. I'm sure the other members who just wanted my file appreciate it as well.

If you have a problem when you zipped it, that would be one sure way for people to have issues opening it.

I should also point out that I frequent three other forums, each of which use vBulletin. As a test, I uploaded my exact same zip file to each of those forums, and I was able to download and open the zip file from all three of those sites without a problem.

The only forum where I've had trouble is here.

All three of those forums use vBulletin 3.7.3. RR is at 3.7.1.

If you have a problem when you zipped it, that would be one sure way for people to have issues opening it.

No, I never had problems zipping the file...

Thank You

Lindsay,

Thank you very much for looking into this.

The fix worked. I just tested the RR forums and zip files now upload and download perfectly. No more zip within a zip! RR forums are now handling attachments just like the other forums I frequent.

Grog, Driv3r912, and the others who genuinely helped out..thank you.

RiceCake....oh, nevermind. :roll: I don't want to get myself in trouble.
