Two relatively new comms systems, Berlin Fire dispatch sounds more brassy than the mobile units. Avon CLMRN also sounds this way but it’s both with dispatch and mobile/portable units. I’m running a SDS200 with a Bearcat amplified external speaker. Is there any adjustment I might make to the scanner that would allow for it to improve audio quality? I haven’t tried any of the various filters as reception is strong on both with no dropouts.

No, and the RF filters have absolutely nothing to do with audio levels/quality.

Just create a simple high pass filter to cut off the low end audio. Simple circuit to build at minimal cost.

Yea, don’t know why I even mentioned the filters… the speakers I was thinking of were the communications speakers used for HF, the ham bands-they tend to run on the expensive side. The ones for computers are more in line price wise, but it’s a mobile installation I’m mainly interested in. I’m going to opt for W1KNE’s suggestion of the high pass filter and see about shoehorning it into the amplified speaker case. Thanks everyone.

For mobile use, look on ebay for the used mobile Motorola speakers. They tend to be quite inexpensive, and can easily be adapted to a mini plug. They're quite efficient so it doesn't take much power to get a lot of volume out of them. Or the old Radio Shack (Realistic) square communications speakers. They also work quite well.
