No, that is the right way to do it. It should say on your screen either Temporary Lockout or Permanent Lockout also if you're looking at it. Sometimes I will think that I hit it twice and it only actually registers one press of the Avoid button. But if you do want to permanently lock something out until you manually go in and unlock it, you are doing it the right way by pressing the Avoid button twice in a row fast.

If you are holding on a talk group or frequency and you press avoid twice and it should be permanently avoided. If you press it once it will temporarily be avoided until you turn the radio off and back on again

You can do the same while scanning too. Maybe you are not pressing it the second time fast enough?

Also, you are powering down the scanner using the power key, right? If it does not write the SD card on power-down it will not retain your changes.

You should be able to do the same thing while it's scanning also. I know I can on my SDS100 and SDS200.

Yep, just have to double tap while scanning and it will be permanent.

You can also hit Function, then Avoid, for a permanent lockout. But it's easier for me to do the quick double Avoid to make it permanent.

What you have to remember with the SDS 100 is if the display is off it takes one key push to wake it than two avoids for permanent. That is why the 100 does not have a key pad lock.

Actually I misspoke as others are pointing out. As long as the screen is active you can do it scanning or holding, I guess I must have been thinking I didn't know what the status of your display was, if it was on all the time or went on and off by timer and that's why I suggested holding on an object. I'm bad ;)
