Before I dig into a large rack with 8 of these and half a dozen APX mobiles and associated antenna cables, power cables and external speakers, is the backlight swap a DIY thing? (can you tell I don't really want to dig them out??)

If I tell you no, will it make you feel content?
I would imagine it could be replaced by the end-user, but where would you get one and how much would it cost? Then compare that to the $89 flat-rate that Uniden charges for any repair.

They kinda pay me to do stuff like the backlight replace, unless I can persuade them otherwise. I think I will send them off one at a time, and prolong the misery!! But we've been striking on replacement parts for lots of things recently, so they will understand....
GRACIAS.....

I was going to ask the same thing except I have a BCD996P2. I had it set to Cyan for awhile now the colors are not right. Yellow looks orang, white looks peach, Blue is so dark can it nothing on the screen and Magenta & Red look the same. I was wondering if anyone has taken one of these apart and replaced the lights or should I send it in?

YIKES....I got one of the 536hps out of the rack...and just took the covers off. Yea, they are going to have to spring for $89 and let the pros do this!!!!!

Try reseating the cables to the front panel.

Nope. Believe me when I say you will have less trouble attempting to gargle with peanut butter than trying
to change that backlight. IIRC Uniden had a recall for the backlight and also the clock function, a free fix.
You may want to call them for details but even if you have to shell out $89.00 it's still worth every penny
than DIY.

It's doable. I've done two, my personal one in yellow and a member here in green to match an XTS5000 control head color. No I won't do more because I don't have time. It's just a few surface mount LEDs. If you have the experience and tools it's not a big deal at all.
