I'm trying to decide if I need to add a balun/unun to a long wire antenna on my R8600. I've done searches an most of what I've found say to use one to match the impedance of the antenna to the Rx. However, on the R8600, ANT 3 is set up for a 500 ohm wire antenna so I'm wondering what would a balun/unun get me if I were going to use that connector for a long wire.

The wire I plan to use will be strung around an attic due to HOA restrictions so I know there will probably be some noise to deal with. I'll keep it as far from any metal as I can.

Do baluns help reduce such noise? It's hard to tell from the answers i've seen online since most discussions are dealing with transmitting antenna.

A true transformer balun. A balun with ferrite core and windings that are isolated from each other, will reduce the common mode current that flows on the shield of the coax. So noise picked up by the coax will be minimized. Your loop will still pick up noise but it will be less. Try to keep it away from noise generating electric and network wires.
