To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello and greeting to all forum members reading this.
I am a licensed radioamater and I ordered my DM-1701 from Aliexpress.

Initially everything worked. I installed USB drivers and was able to read and write codeplug.
After a few modifications of codeplug, I am no longer able to read, or write codeplug using CPS DM 1701 V1.05.
I don't get an any error message, like it happens with no radio attached, or without driver.
CPS DM 1701 just don't start to communicate with my radio, but it stays responsive. I am able to close "Write data to radio" window by clicking "Cancel", or X in right top corner.
Radio appears to be working. I can listen to a DMR repeater and use it as analog radio.

Radio is recognized by device manager in windows11. And I am able to correctly read and write contacts *.csv file using "Program -> Write Contacts -> Write" option in CPS DM 1701.

I am using Windows 11 with CPS DM 1701 V1.05 installed (I also used windows10, with same result).
Radio (in "Menu -> Utilities -> Radio Info -> Versions") says it is:
Firmware Ver. : V002.006
CP Ver. :V01.05

There seems to be no "Reset to defaults" option in Radio menu.

I found a thread where someone could upload codeplug moments after Windows recognized the radio. This solution also does not work for me.
I was unable to find FW V002.006 anywhere on the internet. Closest reference I was able to find is FW V002.003.

Should I give OpenGD77 a try ?
Any other ideas, what to try ?

Best regards.
Simon

Yes, use opengd77 although not sure it will solve your issue. 77 has a much better interface and worked very well on my 1701 although there is definitely a learning curve but worth it.

Thank you very much for your answer.

Changing FW to OpenGD77 did help.
I am still learning how to use new user interface.

It also looks like I have another problem:

I left radio with an empty battery on a charging station over night.
In the morning I noticed that red LED is stll lit on a charging station.
I could also smell something burning in a battery.

Battery voltage was 8.04V (measured with DMM). Radio reports 8.1V.

Radio appears to be working, I don't think this is normal.

Sorry false alarm. It appears like nothing is overheating.
Source of a burnt bakelite like smell appears to be coming from charging base's PCB.

I decided to have a closer look at Battery, charging base and wall adapter:

Wall adapter is in a glued or ultrasonic welded plastic case.
Nominal output is 10V 1A. I measurd unloaded output voltage to be 9.97V. So wall adapter looks OK.

Battery is also in a sealed case. All I could do is measure voltage on contacts.
I fully charged only the battery in a charging base, waited for charging LED to turn green, and measured 8,26V on battery contacts going to the radio. I then removed the battery from charging base and after some 15min measured 8,21V. So far OK.

When I opened charging base, smell similar to a burnt bakelite got stronger.
However I was unable to find anything wrong with charging base electronics.
IC (marked as HC5812 MSLX401) looks like a linear Li-Ion charging regulator in 8 pin SMD package, that is using coper surface on PCB (printed circuit board) for cooling, and 6 pcs. 0805 size resistors.
Everything inside charging base looks OK. I couldn't see any color change or damage on components or PCB.

The source of a burnt bakelite like smell appears to be coming from a compound in a charging base's PCB.
Probably when linear regulator heats up the PCB, more of a foul smell gets released from PCB's resin.
I also own BAOFENG UV-10R. Its charging base have similar smell, but not so strong that could be detected while picking up the radio from its charging base.

Remaining mistery is why battery was still charging in the morning.
It could be, that average charging current is well below 1A, end of charging current detection is set very low, charging base did not have good enough contact with the battery, or battery voltage dropped low enough, that another charging cycle have started.

To be on a safe side will try to measure battery capacity.

Battery chargers and bases have always been a mystery to me( not really😵‍💫) although I realize that all the charger does is to provide hopefully a well regulated voltage since it is mostly up to the base or radio to process this voltage correctly. I do not remember my 1701 taking that long to charge even when radio fully depleted, but it might have taken 7-8 hours for the green
Anyway, enjoy the radio and OpenGD77. The nice black background display by itself makes it worthwhile to me.
