• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

What puzzles me, however, is how to print-out the CHIRP "Spreadsheet" !

I don't have it in front of me, but if you click Radio | Export | CSV File, you should be able to export the your data. Then go to Excel and open the CSV to print. An extra step in some ways, but in Excel you can add formatting or delete columns as you see fit.

Hope that helps.

Success With Printing Baofeng Data

Yes - I was able to Export the CHIRP loader file in the CVS format into the Windows Spreadsheet quite easily. The data popped into convenient columns for viewing. I added an extra column on the left of the frequency column for repeater call signs and location of town or mountain. Then I created a generous column on the extreme right for "Notes". It was necessary to eliminate some extraneous columns that were carried over from the CHIRP format in order to create a printout on a single letter sized sheet without sprazzling over onto a second sheet to the right. All 99 Baofeng radio channels tucked nicely on one and two thirds of letter sized sheets of paper. The Spreadsheet is saved in an XLR format from whence the printing is done.

As far as I know, there are no speaker-mics that work with the UV-3R. Someone said that it would work with the Yaesu MH-34, but that isn't verified.

I just bought one of these a few weeks ago to check out since I have APRS customer's asking me for a tracker cable. I quickly found out that even though it uses the four conductor 1/8" (3.5mm) plug, it's not pinned the same as the amateur industry standard. The TX audio and PTT lines are separated. I don't have the pinout in front of me to share.

The first thing I tried was plugging in of of my MFJ spk/mics that uses the single plug. I got key up instantly and no tx audio. That told me it wasn't standard pinout. Once I determined ground, I used that to short to each conductor and found PTT. I think a modded MFJ mic would work, but you would have to mod the mic internally.

low tech volume solution on uv 3r: place a round, cut piece of thin cork (or any insulating material) under the spkr . remove case, remove spkr, (note contacts go down)cut a thin sound insulation wafer (i used cork, very thin) and place under the spkr inside the case. you must take out the existing rubber gasket. put back together. this reduces top volume a lot. i also put another sound baffle on the outside. works.

FM Radio Reversion

Now, Here is another problem with the Baofeng UV-3R that I seem not to be able to solve. - Maybe someone can help !

Specifically - it's this - When I set the unit on a repeater frequency, it stays there nicely listening to white noise and waiting for someone to key the repeater and bring it up - no problem !

But - When I crank in a squelch condition, the idle repeater white noise goes away - no problem there either. - The problem, however, presents itself when the HT reverts itself to an FM radio channel within a few seconds and stays there - rather than remaining on the repeater frequency !

Anyone noticed this - or have a solution ?

Well - The solution to this problem, I find, is to hold in the orange FlashLight button (L/R) on the left side for a couple of seconds and this flip-flop condition is disabled. Now, isn't that nice ?

I got mine yesterday from RadioShop888.

For you guys that already have one, this won't be very interesting, but I've done a quick unboxing video.

And I walk through the menus here.

I've got one on order from RadioShop888! Ordered it after seeing your unboxing video BrickOLore, keep up the good work.

Maybe we'll have a good showing on RR and won't need to join the yahoo group.....

I picked up one of these off ebay.. I couldnt resist $47 and that included shipping... Its what you would expect in a $47 radio. Cheap case, but not a bad little radio to play with. I wouldnt want it as my only rig, but make a nice throw around radio. Would make a nice little APRS dedicated radio as well.

Lentini communications in CT is selling these also. My understanding is the radios output power is not whats stated but I guess thats being worked on. but hey for 50 bucks what do you expect. I'll keep my high end stuff, but I still play around and use my TYT's all the time.

Got mine over the holidays. Nice little radio and very easy to program manually. Might get the software eventually but in no big hurry for that right now.

It hits all of my local repeaters and I've gotten nothing but good audio reports. It's the perfect size (and weight) for being stashed in my bicycle bag when I get back to some serious bike riding come spring.

About the only thing I'd like to see is an alpha display. That would make it perfect for me.

Overall, I'm quite pleased with it.

:)

I've been running with mine for a little while now. I love it. A few friends have picked them up to listen to while they study for their tech lic. Every one says I sound clear and great.

I've had mine for a couple of days now, seems like money well spent. I've got the mkII and have found that if I have anything plugged into the headphone jack, it won't respond to keypad input. I guess it thinks its being programmed or something. The included software was squirley so I downloaded the driver and software from here. I'm using the "Windows 7 Updated Driver Radio Cable" listed on the page in the link above and have had great success. I plan to eventually use the AA battery case option and can't wait for the hacks to come out once everyone has some time to play with it.
