I have been in scanning off and on for many years. I have always lived in the city and wood frame homes. I recently moved out of the city and into the country. We bought a barndo and it is all metal siding and roof. My question is, what is the best antenna to listen to mostly 800 mhz and vhf? Also, I’m guessing I need to mount it outside, or will the attic work? Thanks.

You might get by with a discone mounted above the roofline. Be sure to ground it, antenna, mounting rod and cable, to your utility ground by the meter. That would be best location.

If the roof/siding is metal, you'll need to get the antenna outside the structure. Nothing inside is going to work well.

Done right and with good coaxial cable, you'll probably be amazed at the results. Most scanners are hampered by poor antennas. A good outdoor antenna will really make a difference.
