I have a Uniden BC9000XLT. It is 500 channel conventional only scanner. Have had it for several years and would not part with it. Excellent reception in all bands. Alphanumeric tags for channels 1-250.

I am looking for a nice recieving conventional base scanner. I am looking for an affordable radio. Please give me some suggestions

Look at the Radio Shack PRO-433. It has all the regular bands plus the Military Air band 225-400MHz. Very rugged steel case and chassis, good audio, comes with DIN car mounting adapter and A/C adapter. Only $169.99.

Step by step programming instructions here:

The Uniden trunk trackers are also great conventional scanners as well.
Something like a used BC-780 would be good I would think.

Depends on what you intend on listening to.

Conventional public safety type stuff? VHF? 800MHz? Are you interested in milcom listening? marine band? Rail? Knowing what you want to use it for would help in making a reccomendation.
