My NEW BCD436HP was delivered Monday, Dec. 7th. After stumbling through the date and time set up, I reached the point were the battery's needed recharging. My question is; can I listen to the scanner while battery's are being recharged in the radio ? This scanner is replacing a old Radio Shack trunk scanner that worked when plugged in with or with out battery's.

Nope...
The battery's can only be charged with the radio off... Follow instructions on the radio's display...
You can power the radio from the supplied usb cable and any ac to usb adapter with it in serial mode or charge the batt's with the radio off...
Note: It's takes about 50 hours to fully charge the internal clock battery to get about a week or so of power to hold the time and date when the radio is not turned on. The clock battery will charge anytime the radio is on and running be it from the AA's or usb adapter...

Addition-- It is not advisable to charge the battery's in the scanner itself. It is not a smart charging circuit (It is a timed setup) and you can overcharge and overheat the battery's unless you keep an eye on it...

Battery

Very good, thank you for the info. I have three extra AA's and a charger. I will just change the battery's. After the 50 hour time period.

In other words, buy a battery charger. Its made to charge batteries, unlike your radio.

You can listen to your radio via usb power, but not charge too.
