So I think I may have fried the rechargables in my HP-1 by attempting to charge them even tho they were already charged (not on purpose, i guess impatience about wanting to listen and not reading the prompt about "start charging") and now they won't charge at all. So I went and bought a new set of rechargables and am trying to save myself the same headache by calculating the charge time. First question is, what is the battery charge rate current of the Homepatrol 1? and second, is there a way to make it only charge when the battery's are actually in need of it, or is that entirely up to my discretion?

Batteries

This is why many do not charge in the scanner. A good external charger will give you more consistent results. There are several chargers that will recondition batteries, and the better ones charge each cell individually rather than the series method in the radio.

You are lucky you don't have a fried radio too. That thing has no control. Charge for x hours, no matter what. Formula for disaster.

Get a battery charger while you still have a radio. It's a device made for charging batteries.
