BBC Frequencies

Down here in San Antonio, Texas I can also easily catch the BBC simulcasted on 89.1 FM NPR Radio
about 5 or 6 times a day Well that is cheating to some minds but reception this way is so easy !!!
About the only SWL I still do is occasionaly the GCN Network out of Nashville on 12.160 SW 11-3pm
Central Time until they resume broadcast on 3.215 SW and then later on 5.070 SW. (Alex Jones Show)
The GCN Network signs and mentions that they have 4 x 100,000 watt transmitters. I have wondered if
these 4 are all located in Nashville, TN and pointed in 4 different directions for maximun coverage ?

The fact that you can get the BBC and for that matter a lot of other SW broadcasts via boring mediums and simulcasts is not the subject matter here. We already know you can do that. This is all about the radio hobby of SW-DXing. SW listening is still very much alive as you can see in these pages. It is the fun of pulling a signal out of thin air from the other side of the world with equipment you set up yourself. Tons of websites and radio clubs are dedicated to this stuff. The subject matter of the programming on these stations to me is secondary to the 'THRILL OF THE CATCH' but I will tell you this-you will get a whole different perspective on events in Asia via a BBC transmission out of Singapore that is meant for ears in the Asias-or a BBC transmission out of South Africa meant for people in the Africas, and the bonus is you are receiving the same medium as was meant for people in the more remote regions of those countries who do not have access to more modern mediums. As n5ims said they point their signal to areas they feel are still important...and we SWLs are catching them way over here

A lot of NPR stations provide BBC coverage in the United States, but it is rather spotty. Here in Southern Ontario we have WNED-AM 970 from Buffalo, which runs BBC from 0200-1000 or so, UTC. But of course AM receptioon of this 5,000 watt channel in Southern Ontario at night is marginal at best. The sister station, WNED-FM, 94.5, carries BBC news programming, but once again, reception in Ontario is poor. It is astonishing (to me) that an English-speaking city the size of the Greater Toronto Area (some 5-6 million!) has no local BBC service...so shortwave it is for us. What I like about shortwave is that it covers vast distances...if I can get it where I work (in the GTA), I can get it at home, and up north at the cottage, and on the lake, and travelling out west to visit family/friends, all that. It is universal, covering all places, and it cannot be interrupted by governments/corporations who (quite frankly) would rather we got their view of the news, rather than us choosing what we want to hear.

You mean to edit them into one post? I will try to but the edit time limit may have me doing new posts is that Ok? I also get you want me to kill the videos? Why? Everyone I talk to say they either enjoy them or don't mind-you are the only one who doesnt seem to approve.

No one is going to call you a lier if you post your catches without a picture, I think that people know you and trust what frequencies your posting, and it has nothing to do about a bad attitude, take a look at all the post people put on this web site, do you really think that they need to verify all there post with a picture of the frequency and there radio. we really do trust what your posting.

Let me tell you something. I may have overdone it with the videos but I was under the impression nobody minded. You got a problem with me-you PM me about it. I have been nice to you so why flame me in a forum? Everyone I asked here who "know" me told me they thought the videos were cool.You and Mike don't. Out of respect for Mike I am reducing them-you on the other hand were NOT cool in your approach.

ridge and all; I am trying to replicate the method used by the many other lists out there that send loggings (notice the plural) through the net. Every one I belong to usually sends several out in one message - unless it's an unusual catch, like the pirate St.Helena broadcast. Yes, it tends to delay things a bit with editing, but the cost is balanced by being able to check things for accuracy.

No one usually posts pictures, but sometimes they do send through links to audio recordings. I know a few folks that do this by using an external file storage site. Remember, unless we're talking a digital mode, FAX or SSTV, HF is largely an audio medium, really not visual.

In no way is this a slap on anyone - it is simply attempting to bring the listings in line with the current best practices. No more no less. It's assumed that every reasonable effort is being taken to properly ID the station; if it takes a little more time with research, it's worth the effort in the accuracy department.

I was using the videos to show the frequency and the spreadsheet and time, and people here told me they appreciated what I was doing. Frankly, I was also very proud of my catches and I guess I went overboard wanting to share them here because you're always gonna get the haters. I was checking with people through PMs trying to make sure I was not offending-I just wish all this could have been handled in PMs instead of throwing me under the public bus out here. Guess I don't get the same respect I give here.

I believe I understand how you feel. I know that you're doing what you do for all of the right reasons. Like most of us here, you love radio and it really shows, and no one can take that away from you. I want you to know that I respect you. I consider you to be a class act, and none of this has changed my opinion one bit.

Now, you just keep on trying to tune in those mid-West stations, and you'll start feeling good again before you know it...

I, for one, really enjoy the videos.

I don't, however, like that the BBC and others have abandoned North America and/or shortwave. But that is something else entirely.

ScanCHS I gotta thank you for that and for having my back-that is being a man to me. I would not hesitate to do the same for you. I call you my friend too I am an enthusiast to a fault and I guess Mike had to reel me in. I don't want to eat up unnecessary bandwidth-apparently the server here won't take too much. So no more videos unless it is something that really calls for it.
Chris I want to thank you too for stepping up here. Hope I can return the sentiment one day. Yeah I agree these stations left us to have to string up tons of wire to try to be involved in SWL and reap some of the unique programming they have BUT the fallout of that is the challenge and experimentation with antennas to reach the world yourself that's the cool factor to me
