I picked up a brand new BCT125AT today. When I use the supplied USB to plug it in, I get a lot of static when receiving transmissions. When I'm only using the batteries it's fine. I have tried plugging it into two different laptops while the laptop is not plugged into the wall. I have also plugged the scanner directly into a USB adapter that is plugged into the wall outlet, all with the same results. Is this normal? I want to be able to record to my laptop without having the static, which requires the USB to be plugged into the laptop.

It probably is the USB power adapter. I have two 125’s at home using USB power and zero noise. In the vehicle the 125 has noise due to the USB power adapter. Unplug it and noise is gone. Proper ferrite beads on the cable may resolve/reduce the interference. A different power adapter may be needed.

Except there was no power adapter being used when plugged into my laptop

Try plugging the USB cable in to the scanner but nothing at the other end and see what happens.
