Use the ARC software. This scanner is almost impossible to program without it.

i would not say that. if this were the case, uniden would take the key pad off the radio.
if you read the owners manual and learn the radio through the key pad, you will learn how valuable the software can be.

I think everyone is entitled to their opinion. That is the beauty of a forum. I personally struggled trying to program the all of the trunk settings manually on the 296 and it is extremely easy using the software. If you read around the forum I think you will find that most people struggle manually programming this scanner. It's not very intuitive.

Al42, How can I set up my Fire Departments transmissions on the internet like you did with that Police Department?
Go to my web site. There are links to all the free software you need to do that. You can post questions here, or on the sites of the people who write the various programs, if you have trouble with them.

All you need to buy, if you don't have it already, is a cable to go between the earphone jack on the scanner and the sound card input on the computer. Everything else (including streaming the alpha tags) is free.

Unfortunately there's no step-by-step instruction set yet. Maybe I'll write something one of these days - or maybe someone else will. (The documentation on scancapecod is very good - but it doesn't use the same software - it uses stuff that costs money.)

i know what you mean. the 296 is easy compared to the 396. but i will say it again-
read the manual.

the problem these days is that everybody wants it to work "out of the box".
it never seems to be that easy.
you go to the store. you buy a vcr. you plug it in and it doesnt work. oops- i forgot to hook it up to the tv. and then, you have to program it. thats what the owners manual is for.
i am also guilty of not reading it- i would like it to work quickly too. but when i read the manual and see what i forgot to do, well you what happens then.

software makes it easy- reading the manual makes it easier to use in the field.
