BC296 resetting itself

Has anyone had this problem? My BC-296D will scan for about 5 minutes, then beep and reset itself to manual mode.

I've tried changing power from adapter to batteries, disconnecting the computer cable, turning the backlight off (I usually have it on because the scanner is plugged in), to no effect.

Any thoughts?

Mine has never done anything of that sort....sounds like it may need to go back to the factory. I cannot think of any user setting that would induce such bizarre functioning.
