:) To all of the 296,250 and other Uniden scanner owners that radios uses the original battery pack. I had a battery pack made for $15 including the batteries 4 of the AA 2500mah standard size nickel-metal hydride rechargeable. It is larger than the original pack but will fit in to the radio. I fully charged it last night. started running the 296 at 9:15 AM and is still going strong at 1:15 PM. I will post when its DEAD.

That is awesome for a BC296D. I had a BC250D that would only last about 4 hours tops using little backlight. That was from brand new! And no digital card so you have definately improved your battery life!

I have 3 of these handhelds ever since they came out. I never have gotten more than 30 mins out of a charge. 8 1/2 hours is great .Had it made at a store called Batteries Plus They used the same white type of wrap placed them at the same angles and used the same connection from the old pack.

I made my own and have been using it for about a year with the 296D. I get about 8 - 9 hours on mine. It was a pain to solder them together because I had to do it by myself but if you had another person it would help. I wrapped white medical tape around mine.

Re:

I use the Primecell Scan Max SMX 4.8v battery pack designed for 250/296 and it works great with my 296d. When fully charged I get 13-15 hours in analog only mode. With the digi card enabled I get 8-10 hours. This is without the backlight, which I am sure eats a lot of power. They're at primecell.com, $19.95 and highly recommend.

hey i got a custom made 2600 for my 296D scanner , now i jsut charged them once (about 25 hours, seeing how it takes 14- 16 for the 1500 mAh) and it only lasted 2 hours (that is from on to off) i am really getting suspicious of my scanner and its ability to charge.. after all these are BRAND NEW battery pack custom made by a reputable company. and i don't get why i can't even get 4 hours out of them .
any sugestions? maybe it is the wall ac adaptor that come stock with it.. any way i can test the unit / ac adater wit ha multimeter to see if it is delivering the right amount of current.
thanks
