I need a Portable scanner
Budget 600 bucks
SDS100. A bit more than the $600, but not much, depending on where you buy it. Worth it, too, but it does take some getting used to. As it's a micro SD card based scanner, it'll record. Point of advice: watch YouTube videos on the SDS100.

Looking for opinions. I have been considering buying an SDS scanner for quite some time now, and I’m ready to pull the trigger. My problem is, I’m having a horrible time trying to decide between the 100 and the 200. I love the portability of the 100 but it seems that it gets more complaints than the 200.. Battery life, cheap build, poor reception, etc. The extra money for the 200 is no issue, if it’s really that much better. If I go with the 200 , I plan on getting extra brackets to be able to easily switch between vehicles, house, etc.

Both the 100 and the 200 suffer from poor reception due to one factor: the antenna. It's a piece of..... Well, we won't go there.

Battery life on the 100 is 6-8 hours, which for most is more than sufficient.

For all the complaints about "cheap build", many more will tell you just how rugged the 100 really is.

Even about the sound, there are some who will complain about volume at 15 as "not enough", while for most, 7-10 is perfectly fine. (I usually keep it at 8.)

The only other real extras to consider are the feature upgrades (DMR, NXDN, ProVoice, Waterfall), but these are one's own choices to make.

Deciding on which, really, boils down to this: Portable/mobile or home? Even the 100 can be a simple home receiver, but I chose mine for the portability. I don't have a vehicle to deal with, but I like the ability to simply carry mine around as I see fit.

(Yes, I have the SDS100.)

Yes I have 2 SDS200's 2 SDS100's 7 536's 9 996P2's 2 15's 2 15x's 2 436's 3 325P2's 1 160 1 260 all connected to Stridsbergs sharing an ST2 antenna at 30 feet and my Scanners all connected at the same time pickup Analog the same P25 the same DMR the same and NXDN the same.
So using the same antenna at the same time is fair testing.

Going by your locale listed on your profile. The info for your county at this page: NC Counties Verified

Your county says this: '100% VIPER, Fire paged on VHF-Hi'. VIPER is P25p2. So, I would recommend the BCD436HP.
