Checksum

I have gotten to Version 1.04.12
Mine reads Sum=OFF, M-Ver=1 Why does it not show the correct #s etc. beside SUM ?

The screen already has the correct serial number for my scanner, I verified this by checking inside the battery compartment. This value cannot be changed on the screen. I entered the nine integers for the esn serial number following the common default digits as well as the esn checksum value. I've verified both the esn serial number and checksum value under firmware version in my scanner and also with desktop text icon that is created at the time of the esn update. I can't find any errors.

Sounds like either the wrong serial number or, as Paul alluded to there is a very slight possibility of two scanners with same serial #, but a very very slim chance.

Zero-F-F is 255 as depicted in hexadecimal. It is not the word off. Those are figures, not letters.

Did you even try to enter it into the web page?

Thanks to everyone for their help. I may have to PM Upman with my scanner serial number and other info to get this fixed. Got to go to work now and will get back to this tonight.

I was sooooooo close

Hi UPMan!
In attempting the V2 firmware download for my BCD396T I got all the way to where I'm trying to open the V2 zip file and my computer tells me it can't open the file because it doesn't know where the file came from. I'm running Windows XP. The computer offered to go online and find a program I can download that will open the file. I'm not having any luck.

Are you aware of a site I can go on to download a program that will open this SCN file?
Thanks....I was sooooooo close!

Once you open the zip file, you will need to EXTRACT not OPEN the scn file, which basically means take it out of the zip file and put it somewhere (like your desktop). Then you'll run the BC updated program and choose the scn file to install it to the scanner.

Thank you for the quick reply UFEMTFF,
When I try to extract the info from the V2 zip file...that's where my problem is. My computer is having trouble because it's a scn file. If I go online to try and get a program to extract the files, I get sites that want to scan my computer for free then charge 30-40 bucks to fix it. I'll pay the money if I think it will help me extract the files. I'm not a computer guy and I'd hate to pay the money and find out I still have a problem. Any ideas?
Thanks

I need the checksum to get to version 2

Yes, you do. According to your post above, you have a checksum. Update your registration information to include your ESN and Checksum, then you'll have a link on your "All My Scanners" page to get the registration key. Click that link and get your key. Then, the link will change to "Get V2 Update". Click that link, download the 3 files, then read the instructions in the release notes (one of the three files you d/l'd) to proceed.

First of all, don't pay anyone anything!!!

Think of it like this... the SCN file is what the scanner needs to be updated (it is the program for the scanner only). The ZIP file is like you have packed that file up. You need to take the file (SCN) our of the breifcase (ZIP file), and put it somewhere so that you can use the BC Update program to put the SCN file onto your scanner.

Now - that being said - as far as I know Windows has had the capability of opening the breifcase (zip file) since 98 or ME. What version of Windows are you running?

I'm running Windows XP. The computer is able to extract the info from the zip file. here's where the fun begins...I now have a scn 2945KB file in "My Documents". It's when I go to open that file I get the message saying "Windows cannot open this file"
Now...am I supposed to have the BCD396T hooked up to the computer at this point? I disconnected it after I installed the ESN loader and got the ESN/Checksum.
Thanks again!

You don't open the .scn file. Use BC_VUP to load it into the scanner. Should be V2_00_06.scn for the 996 and V2_00_07.scn for the 396. Be sure to have your 32 digit key number ready to type in the box when prompted.

Update Question, Please

Hi,

Have just started the update process for my 996, and am confused already.
I'll blame it on my age.

Really want to do it correctly.

On the Uniden page, where it says to enter "the last 9 numerical digits of the S/N" :

My S/N is apparently 335Z64001400 (note the "Z")

do I therefore enter Z64001400

or skip the Z and enter 564001400 (as the Z isn't numerical)

----------
Just for info, my ESN shows as 33526
Looks like the Z turned into a 2 ?

Thanks,
Bob

O.K.!

You're on the right track. Now open the update program (run the update program) and it will want you to tell it where the SCN file is. Just point it to "My Documents" click the SCN file and click o.k. It will give you instructions on the rest.

OK...I used BC VUP I clicked on the extracted file, selected the com port, the baud rate and the download began without asking me for the Key. I got no error messages and the update ran fine. When i turn on the scanner a prompt comes up telling me to "resend update with key"
I have the key I just never was asked to enter it.
Anyone have any ideas ?

Try running it again. You have to enter the 32 digit key number for it to work.

does it usually ask for the key before the update begins? I just ran it again (it's updating now) and again I have not been asked for the key yet.
