What are the settings

Alright, downloaded and installed the new firmware. I have the same audio issues where as the Analog is much louder than digital. I accessed the AGC tweak menu, (hold the hold/resume while powering on), push the function knob, then vol control. Thats fine.

From reading here I understand the P25 Res Time is the audio range? I understand the Gain is the volume. I have mine adjusted P25 Res -7 and +5 for the Gain.

Turning off the digital AGC from within the settings funtion in the menu, performing the same adjustments for the Analog.

Ana Res Time -4 (assuming this is range)
Ana Gain -5 (assuming this is volume)
Ana Gain Range 6 ( Have know idea what this is for)

Can someone shed some light on these settings, the factory optimum defaults, and what they should actucally be?

Another observation with 1.13.17

If the back light timeout is set to 'Infinite' and close call is enabled, after a while the back light will go off. I have tried different CC Alert Modes - Beep/Light/Beep+Light with no difference. If CC is turned off, the back light stays on as it should. Once it gets into this mode, the back light will only stay on for a few seconds after pressing the light/power button.

I have toggled back and forth between 1.11.03 and 1.13.17. This only happens with the newer firmware.

What an obscure and interesting bug you have found. Cool.
I have always wanted more back lighting options. Like having the radio light up if a specific channel hits (emergency air for example) and you may be across the room and can't hear it but you would know it is a transmission you want to listen to.
More timing options would be nice and it would be great to be able to have 5 or 10 dimmable levels of brightness as well.
It is interesting that with every feature on a radio like this there is always room for refinement.

I had this info in my files. I believe it to be accurate, but I am not sure where I originally got it. I think it came out when the first unofficial "AGC Tweak" was circulated.

P25 RES TIME
Range: -8 to +8
This parameter determines how frequently the AGC factor updates. Decreasing this value makes AGC respond faster, but could result in "pumping". A higher value decreases the response time.

P25 REF GAIN
Range: -5 to +5
This parameter determines the reference level that AGC attempts to adjust the volume to. If digital/analog volume is not matched, adjust this parameter.

ANA RES TIME
Range: -8 to +8
This parameter determines how frequently the AGC factor updates. Decreasing this value makes AGC respond faster, but could result in "pumping". A higher value decreases the response time.

ANA REF GAIN
Range: -5 to +5
This parameter determines the reference level that AGC attempts to adjust the volume to. If digital/analog volume is not matched, adjust this parameter.

ANA GN RANGE
Range: 0 to 15
This parameter controls the total dynamic range of the AGC adjustments. A larger value allows a wider variation in volume.

I believe that the oriiginal factory default values for these parameters were 0.

For this the default value is 6.

Sure, on that particular system to which you set those settings. Every system needs different settings.

Still no luck. I can download the firmware updater but it doesn't run. It keeps looping back to Install shield and that's all I get.

What am I doing wrong? This is getting frustrating! I never had any problems with the last firmware update.

go back to about the first page where someone posted the firmware and updater. the stand alone updater is with that. the "installer" basically decompresses the updater to a folder and creates shortcuts to it.

OK. Thanks. I finally got it done! My mistake just like I thought. Trying to get updater from wrong folder. Plus for some reason I thought I had to change .scn file to .exe but that was not the case. Thanks everyone for the assistance!

Installed the new firmware, and I have the same problems outlined already:

One P25 system is now quite at volume level 4, you cannot hear them at all now, before the update you could hear them on vol level 1. This is a huge problem for me.
While the other P25 system I moniter is alot louder in volume. Both already use AGC, so I cannot use that digital agc option on the scanner. Before the update--Both systems were very close in volume. This has ruined any chance of listening to both of these systems at the same time!! Each system needs its own gain control now.

-- Some might say, why not go back to a previous firmware?

I'll tell you why. Ghosting Talk Groups. This is a HUGE flaw in one of the standard options that I paid $500 for. Great now I can ID search, and ID scan 2 different systems. Oh wait, no I can't because of the volume issue.

We have waited 7+ months after they acknowledged the problem for a ghosting talk group fix. That should have been released as a separate update RIGHT AWAY. Instead they added a bunch of 'updates' that obviously messed other stuff up.

Add in the fact of registering to get updates.(To track statistics about you?!) I'm beginning to become slightly dissapointed over this.

I'm so glad I dont own a 996 at this point. If uniden doesnt release the prevous firmware for those guys or fix all these issue's for both scanners there is going to be a turn of events that will leave uniden wishing they had. (1 bad experance leads to many stories, while a good experiance may not lead to any.. )

No offense to anyone from uniden. Just stating some FACTs and my opinion--For those of you that actually pay attention this is a $500 radio, that should have worked perfect from the get go. (Instead they have been continuing to make products, instead of FIX the current issue's. Just a word of advice if you wish to keep selling scanners--SLOW DOWN AND FIX STUFF.)

Oh and 25 beta testers? Wow, thats pretty low. Especially when you have a forum full of hundreds of people that own your product and they find these problems in less then a week. Maybe you should think about adding about 25-50 more. They obviously cannot handle testing as it is, 4 months of testing. Only to have added worse problems, then you fixed.

I would say thanks. But it would probably look sarcastic. I do truly appreciate the fact im not left totally out in the cold with uniden but after a while it gets pretty chilly..

Carry on!

did you make sure you were selecting the correct com port? did you get the error during the update or did it even start?

EXACTLY!!!

I updated mainly due to the issue with the VA State Police STARS. I have yet to monitor it but I wanted both scanners updated to be ready.

I have noticed that the original thread poster has been quiet on this issue on both scanners.

Wow! ctrl. Your right on the money, with your opinion. That's why i reverted back too the 1.11.03, it's okay for now. I have toggled back and forth between the 1.11.03 and 1.13.17 comparing the two of them. They seem too both have their good and bad points. But the 1.13.17 having more issues that I'm aware of, especially with the p-25 digital agc volume issue and the sensitivity's or receptions abit off on the UHF and vhf bands. Worse off than before. Oh well, i just have too wait too see whats next with the uniden corp. I haven't noticed any issues with the bct15 firmware changes, so maybe they got that one right. I'm looking at purchasing the 996 soon. Hopefully i don't run into these problems.

That's what's supposed to happen!?

edit:

Engages brain...Sorry! Re-apply the update, the blue screen is the 'firmware updater' ready screen. Else re download the firmware with another browser if at all possible.

edit again:

A com port error suggest a Window/hardware issue, or possibly com port -> scanner speed mismatch (mine are both set to 115200)
