Hello,

So I'm new to the scanner scene. So I bought a BCD436HP because I did some research that this is a good starter radio, because programming "can be a nightmare to newbies". So what my issue is with the digital frequencies. The scanner picks them up, stops, but nothing is being broadcasted. Other channel frequencies work fine. Ive tried some youtube videos but hard to figure out this one. Read the manual also and couldnt find anything. So is there a setting I need to change or enable? any help ladies and gents would be greatly appreciacted. Also I live in Canada, so not sure if the digtal frequencies are different from area to area.

Digital is digital. How are you trying to listen? Using zip code and full database or did you create a favorites list? And also, the 435/536 sometimes suffer from simulcast depending on certain factors. Some people say that scanner wont work on simulcast at all, but there are many others how listen to simulcast systems without issue. If you could post a link to the system your having trouble with it would be helpful.

Hey Dave, I'm using the zip code and full database. I didnt create a fav list. I have the talkgroups on I want to hear in the settings. I just purchased the DMR upgrade. So I'm waiting now to see if that fixes the issue. I was unaware you needed that upgrade to hear some of the frequencies.

You only need Dmr, Nxdn or Provoice upgrades if the freqs you wish to listen to are those. Is what your trying to listen to DMR? P25, will work right out of the box without any upgrades.

I’m pretty sure they are DMR. I know it does say in the bottom corner they are P25. But for police and EHS it won’t play audio. Just stop on the frequency. It will do Fire P25 and other P25. How do I know if it’s DMR frequency from the list for Nova Scotia Canada for Halifax? I appreciate the help to the newbie too!

Also purchasing the DMR didn’t help getting the voice to broadcast.

How do I know if they are encrypted on my scanner? Also what’s RRDB page? I’m a newbie and learning. Thanks for the help.
We were all new at one time.... 😁
Radio Reference Database. There is a page for each state and province. Nova Scotia is here:
Find the system/agency you are trying to monitor. For each frequency (or talkgroup if it is a trunked system), check the "Mode" column. If there is an "E" in that column, it is full-time encrypted, an "e" is part-time encryption. No scanner will decode encryption.

I believe that this is the system you are trying to monitor. It is a P25 - Phase I system. To see what is encrypted, look for DE in the Mode column. The “E” indicates that the TalkGroup is encrypted.

So it says they are DE or D. More DE. So that means no matter what I can’t listen to those channels?

That’s correct. That’s the system I’m trying to monitor. But I guess where it is encrypted my BCD436HP won’t monitor all the channels is what I was told. It will some, but not all.

What I find shocking is how much digital encrypted we have in Nova Scotia. All our local police, ambulances and RCMP are. Not like it’s a high crime rate or anything here…..lol

I just looked thru the system and indeed that's a lot of E. As happens here in the US, fire stuff is usually not encrypted. Ambulances encrypt for "patient confidentiality" or at least that's their excuse. Police depts and statewide cops for officer safety! Or in other words, because they can. Dig around through the archives and you'll find long discussions about encryption. For many of us it's meant moving into other areas to listen to...aviation, railroads, etc.
