I am thinking of getting this BCD436HP scanner BUT i was told that the speaker sound is very muffled sound, can the speaker be replaced with a better speaker?

Huh? Between the SDS100 and the BCD436HP, I feel that the BCD436HP sounds better than the SDS100. The SDS100 has some water resistance built into it and all, so that is a factor in perceived audio fidelity.

I think I saw awhile back someone had blown their 396XT speaker, and I think they took a speaker roughly the same size from a Cell Phone (or something?) with the near/same impedance and replaced it, but that's the closest I have ever seen about replacing speakers on a scanner.

The 436 has great audio. Whoever said its not has hearing issues. If you get one, Check out this thread on external battery pack. Can't do this with the SDS100. I love mine getting over 24 hours of scanning.

Use cell phone headset or desktop pc speakers or the Uniden Amplified speaker. You have options. Unless I'm in a quiet room-none of my handhelds sounded good. Size at the sacrifice good sound. Modern TV's are the same way.

You can get a USB power bank that can power the SDS100 for extended periods depending on the capacity of the power bank.

Well dam. Didn't do my home work. But am happy with my 436 as can still use AA batteries when needed vs the battery in the SDS100 needs charging.

What loon told you it was "muffled?" I would argue that there is a distinct difference between my GRE PSR 500, 436HP and SDS 100.

In my opinion, the GRE produced a more natural-sounding voice than Uniden. However, my Uniden models do quite well.

Always carry one of those mini power banks the size of 4 AA's and a USB cable with a multi selection connector. Then you can power most anything that has run down it's batteries.

I leave batteries out of the 436 since getting the battery pack. Still hunting for a case that will hold both. The hunt continues. Will probably end up going to a canvas shop to have a custom made case.

I might have to replace my 436 speaker then. It's good but doesn't sound as good as the SDS100 I tried out.

Try a 10uF bipolar capacitor in series with the speaker. It will let it sound more like a small SDS100 speaker with less low and midrange. It's the same speaker used in several Uniden scanners, BC75XLT BC125AT BCD436 and more and are 15 ohm 0,5W 32mm diameter.

Had my 436 for 3 years. Volume and quality of sound is great. FAR superior to the tinny, cheap SDS 100 I recently bought. Granted the 100 does simulcast better, BUT weigh your options. If your 100% simulcast get the sds100, if your really only 75%, still go for 436, you will not be disappointed.
