How old is your scanner. I have four 536's. One is in the 3800 series and the other 3 are in the 4800 series. All have had the clock battery and the dim display LED repair. The one in the 3800 series also had the distorted headphone audio repair. All four have the 1.28.24 firmware and I have no problem switching the display on any of them. A hardware change could possibly be causing the problem. I do not use the WiFi dongle.
I’ll have to check the serial number to find out what series it is. I sent the unit back to unit in about three months ago to have the function knob replaced. The work order said they also did the battery mod at the same time. I just had an idea. I’m going to try and disable priority scan and see if that makes a difference. Even though I pause scanning priority scan is still active and I’m thinking that might be what is causing the problem.

So if you push the function knob the "F" doesn't appear in the upper left?

Did you check the firmware version since the scanner was returned? They may have swapped the circuit board and you have a hardware change. You may still have old firmware.

I updated the firmware after I got it back. I have solved the problem. I disabled priority scan, and now allows me to change the display. When I thought about it, part of the procedure was to take the radio out of scan mode. Priority scan was still scanning in a sense. However, when you hit function, you barely have two seconds to make the change. It would appear that that very short window was decreased with the last firmware update. Thanks to all for their comments, suggestions and assistance.
