Finally getting my 536 today, long overdue after sitting at the UPS Hub in Atlanta since it arrived there Tuesday morning (just as the weather was getting dicey).

Pretty excited, though I'm a little unsure as to what I'm getting into as my last scanner was a BC-246T. It finally went fully kaput back in mid-November, almost to the day that Uniden announced these new ones.

Got an error trying to update the firmware on the BC-WF1.

The error I got was:
Unhandled exception had occurred on your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immedieately.

Access to the path 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Uniden\BC-WF1_FirmwareUpdater\1_31_2014_3_53_30_PM.log'

The way to fix this is to go into the C:\Program Files (x86)\Uniden folder, right-click and then left-click on Properties.
Click on the security tab, and add yourself under "Group or user names".
Click Edit
Click Add
Under "Enter the object names to select" type in your user name on your PC and click "Check Name"
Click OK
Click under "Permissions for SYSTEM" check the "Full Control" box and then click "OK".

Now your user account will have full control of this folder. You can update your firmware and then remove this access if you choose.

To do that, go back to the Uniden folder, right-click, left-click properties.
Click on your Username under "Group or users names" and then click on "Remove". Click OK.

Question re: Sentinel...
Can you not add, reposition, modify conventional frequencies with this program like you can Freescan?
I've been meddling around with it now for hours...what's the point of this program? Is all it does is allow you to see what's on your scanner? Seems kind of useless to me.

Perhaps this is frustration talking, but if you're used to the 996XT, and are comfortable and familiar with banks/groups... be prepared to want to poke your eyes out. This new favourites/system/department format is confusing. I have programmed my local police and fire frequencies into Favourite 01, but get "nothing to scan" when turning it on. And where's the scan button!? Who wants to hit two buttons to resume scanning?? This scanner is nice, and I suppose I'm glad I bought it (wifi potential), but this radio is far too much like the Home Patrol scanners (if you want to call them that.) Perhaps I'll get used to these changes.

It does take some getting used to. You can add/modify/move channels. Once you have appended the channels from the database to a Favorites List, open up the Favorites List editor. Then go to where the channels are located. In the right pane you'll see some icons. The green plus sign allows you to add a channel. The red X deletes a channel. The up and down arrows allow you to move a highlighted channel up or down.

Just guessing but "Nothing to Scan" means there is an issue with Quick Keys or perhaps things are "avoided". Another thing is that you may have not selected the Service Types, which is something you do in the Profile Editor.

I too am beginning to learn the Sentinel and have a long way to go. However the questions you ask are things I racked my brains on for a while too. It really took getting my hands on the scanner for things to begin sinking in.

Thanks for the info. I'll keep plugging away at it. I've reset my scanner 3 times now in frustration. Been at it all day, and I have nothing to show for my time. Little disappointed with Uniden on this one. Clear as mud with respect to programming the scanner. Looking forward to the Easier to Read manual to show up online. IMO more effort was needed with respect to educating people that come from the XT series on just how to navigate this new scanner.

At least it looks nice as a paper weight on my radio desk next to my Kenwood TS 590.

Another issue...
Setting service types...is there a way to rename them? I don't like the Americanized naming system. Law-talk? What is this, Night Court? Can I at least rename the custom ones? Seeing as I'm stuck looking at the tag on my display, can I at least change the name it says or am I bound to these radio reference type tags?

There are some end-users who have posted some helpful videos online (I think links are in this thread). If you have time you might check those out and see if that helps.

New BCD536HP quick mobile mount solution.

Very much enjoying my new BCD536HP which was delivered a couple of hours ago.

While awaiting its delivery, I spent considerable 'quality time' tweaking the Sentinel software, reading posts here, and watching the various helpful videos on youtube.

As for mobile installation, I had a Radio Shack PRO-197 (now in a console mount) mounted atop an old "Kriket" hump-mount with its built-in, non-amplified speaker. This was originally designed for CB use in the 70s and it's tough and reliable (and paid for!).

I slipped the BCD536HP easily into the mounting bracket for the PRO-197, secured it with the black plastic knobs, plugged in the speaker, and voila...instant mount with a quality speaker!

In my vehicle, road noise killed my poor HP-1's audio output until I hooked it to my car's audio system, but *this* thing is terrific and I heartily recommend it and its various descendents!

I have programmed my local police and fire frequencies into Favourite 01, but get "nothing to scan" when turning it on.

Check two things:

1 - you changed your profile (Ctrl+1) to show "Monitor" and "Download" for that favorites list.
2 - you sent the data to the scanner after you made the favorites list (and confirmed step 1).

Setting Priority channels

Not new to scanning but new to the BCD536HP and Sentinel software.

Can someone please explain how to set a specific municipality or frequency as a priority so that broadcasts on that freq will over ride other transmissions? I searched the manual without any luck.

I've been successful in creating a favorites list and writing that to the scanner ! I also learned through trial and error how to manually add a new frequency to scan which is not in the database, using Sentinel.

Thanks in advance for any help.

First, thank you for your response. I "played" with the radio, got it working, but have no idea why or how.

Let me say a few things and perhaps you could put me on the right track. I haven't set any quick
keys so I don't think there was a quick key issue. I haven't got to that level yet. Also, I only have
one favorites list.

With that in mind, I reconnected to Sentinel as I wanted to add two Philadelphia Police Frequencies
to my favorites and update the alert lights. All of that worked and I downloaded the updated list.

Next, I went back into the menu, turned off the full data base and turned on my updated list.

So, here's where I'm thoroughly confused. At first nothing was happening, and specifically
I saw no bars indicating signal strength. Then for some reason, I put the system hold on
for Philadelphia Project 25, and voila, the radio began working.

Why would this be the case? What if I build a list with multiple systems ?

One other mystery: When I took it out of the box, I set it up for zip code just to see what
would happen. I entered my zip and it selected Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and
New Jersey from the database and began scanning, it found the Philadelphia Project 25
system, and the corresponding departments and channels. It worked fine. However, I'm
unable to replicate this as I can't monitor the Philadelphia system. I hear sububan Phila. and
South Jersey transmissions, but no Philadelphia Project 25 (as I did out of the box on Tuesday).

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Mike

PS: After posting this, I undid the system hold and the radio continues to work. So, why did I have these issues
in the first place? One more observation. Yesterday, as today, I simply turned the radio on and it worked perfectly.
I did the exact same thing this morning and had the aforementioned issues

It sounds to me like the control channel changed frequencies to a frequency you don't have programmed. I'm not comfortable enough with the scanner or Sentinel to give you instructions on how to check the frequencies.

First Experience BCD536HP

"City data table read error"
Please check
CityTable_V1.00.00.00.dat
in SD Card

Received scanner today. Unboxed, powered up, set time and zip code, listening to calls.

Installed Sentinel on computer, updated Master Database.

Powered off scanner, connected with USB cable, computer loaded drivers.

Selected 'Write to Scanner'

Program fails to respond. Turn off scanner, unplug cable, turn on scanner, above message.

Now, when I try to update, gives me the above message, and goes right to Mass Storage mode.

Any ideas???

Mass storage mode is the correct mode to write to the scanner. What exactly does the error message say?

Ok I decided to erase all my favorites and do it over just for the experience. Weird thing is I only transferred the departments and channels on the reinstall. I did not add any alert tones or alert lights to my channels this time but they are still working. I then checked the channels in my favorites and the alerts are not enabled. Is there a master file that needs to be erased to reset those options?

Don't know if it's the correct way, but I have been selecting the option to erase favorites lists in the box that pops up after you click write to scanner.

Received the new BCD536HP yesterday and had it up and running quickly after importing an HP-1 favourites list. A bit of tweaking required but good here - nice features and great audio! One thing I have determined quickly is that compared to the BCD996X,T the display definitely holds more info BUT by golly I think I'll need new glasses (magnified) to be able to read the UNIT ID as compared to the display in the 996XT.
