Have the 996p2 and have updated the firmware earlier with BC VUP Version 1.10.01.
Everything fine, and when I updated some Quick Keys, everything went to crap!
Here's what happens.
I turn on scanner, and there the uptones showing its connecting to computer (But its really not)
Welcome screen come on
Then Copyright 2015 screen
Then it hangs at that point. No keys work
I can see on control panel that the driver is ok, auto search in BC VUP says its comm 7, but it can't connect to the scanner
I have tried resetting by pressing 2/9 or 2/6 when powering on but nothing is different.
I can only shut it off by disconnecting the power cord.

I have disconnected the power for 4 hours and tried restarting it..same as above.
Is there another way to hard reset this...any button inside?
Any help would be appreciated

Thanks for the reply. I may not have communicated that well, but that is the procedure I tried. I can turn the volume knob all the way off, and the screen is still lit. Only thing I can get it to do is when I hold the function key down, turn it on.. it brings up a new screen... KEY SAFE MODE OFF

there was some kind of problem with the 996P2 and the 1,10,01 update, something about the serial letters/numbers.

Using BC VUP version 3.03 but the only firmware listed is 1.10.01
Even so, I can't get into my scanner. Cable is good and it shows up in Control Panel, but does not communicate with scanner.
Left it unplugged for 4 hours, and again for 15 minutes. It still hangs at copyright screen, and cannot be turned off unless you pull the plug.

Also was using ARC XT Pro, recently updated version 2.3 build 2 full version

Ok...Think I got it.. OPERATOR ERROR...no **** right?
You have to press 3 Keys at the same time The 2, The 9, and the HOLD button and THEN power on the scanner
I was holding the 2 and the 9 and then powering on.
Its connecting and I'm trying to see if it will upload my favorites list. Thank you guys for helping me out!

Ah grasshopper, to avoid consternation, review post #2! And I can say that because I've done the very same thing!!!!
Glad you got it figured out...
I'm transitioning from a couple of ancient HP1s to 996P2s and they drove me crazy for a week or more!

I have the BCD436 HP and I like it A LOT better that the 996p2. No nationwide data base, no sentinel, and gps has to have sites pre loaed/saved before it will turn off and on. I got a cheapo Etrex with serial cable and that works just fine with both scanners..only now I have to get a different plug for the 996. Thank you

If you have communication problems, you can go to the Scanner tab in ARC-XT and click on Communication Setup. Click on AutoDetect Scanner.
