I have a BCD966P2 scanner that I bought used. I didn';t get a Data cable with it I ordered 2 cables and they both were the same one, which when I ordered them they said they will work, but they don't. Mine needs a end where it goes into the scanner that is a small square end not like the USB-1. It also has a VGA port on it as well. If I can't find the small square end cable can it be programmed from the VGA port or is there a place that I can get the right cable or an adapter for it

That's a serial port that can be used for programming as well as the front USB Mini port, and for a GPS connection, but it can't be used for updating firmware.... only the front port can be used for that.

I wish I could use the front one, but where that plugs into the front of the scanner it don't have the right cable for where it plugs into the scanner. At the scanner it is a small square end and ther eis no beveled areas on it. Like I said previously I ordered a couple of cables and both times it was for the wrong type that IO have. I even gave them the serial number on thinking that it would help

You should be able to get a USB mini at a place like Micro Center. The USB-1 is for the older scanners and new ones have the mini.

As linked for you in post #2 above, the front port on the BCD996P2 is a USB Mini port (not a micro port). A standard, common USB A (computer end) to a USB Micro (scanner end) is what you need.

The older BCD996XT and BCD996T used a Hirose 4 pin connector for the front port... that's what the Uniden USB-1 cable is made for, but that won't work for the BCD996P2.

Does the front port on your scanner look like this USB Mini port?

I have a BCD966P2 scanner that I bought used.

If your Scanner doesn't have this port on the front....

But it does look like this port:

You don't actually have a Uniden BCD996P2 as you indicated in your first post, you most likely have a BCD996XT or a BCD996T which takes the older Uniden USB-1 programming cable that has the serial to USB convertor in the cable.
What model does your scanner show here and on the label on the back of the scanner?

It is the XT, I just looked and it is the XT foir sure
OK, this is the cable you need, it's a generic equivalent of the original Uniden USB-1 cable. I have 3 of these that I use for those older scanners, they work just fine.....

I just ordered one. I could have saved myself a lot of time and a few dollars if I had of just looked and not took for granted what it was. Thanks a ton now I have things on track. I bought used and the guy said it was P2 so that is what I was going on. Can you tell me what the difference is between the two?

The big difference is the ability to listen to TDMA (phase 2) voice channels on P25 systems. When looking at P25 systems in the database, these talkgroups will have a "T" in the "mode" column.

The P2 also had the later added capability to add on DMR and NXDN, for a price.
