Worth noting that for programming, not firmware updates, you can use the DB9 connector on the rear (not "VGA). It can be found as a "USB to Null modem serial" cable, usually. I've got one for some times where the front connectors were damaged or broken.

Just as an FYI for the technical info on that odd connector used on those older Uniden scanners..... It's a Hirose brand Micro-Miniature 4-position Interface Connector For Power Supply/Signaling. Not a very common connector.

I called Mouser this morning and ordered10 of the ends. I tried to call Hirose and never did get through to them. That's when I ordered the parts from Mouser. Thanks again for all the info, I really appreciate it

The firmware updates for your BCD996XT are downloaded through the BC_VUP Firmware Update process.

To check for the version on your scanner:

Menu Key ---> Settings ---> See Scanner Info ---> Firmware Version

The changelog for the BCD996XT firmware updates is here:

Have you unzipped and installed the BC_VUP Firmware Updater on your computer?

Are you using the front port on the BCD996XT for updating the firmware?

Have you verified that when you connect the cable to your computer that a valid COM port has been assigned to it? Look in the Windows Device Manager under "Ports (COM & LPT)" to check for the COM port.

Disregard the 996p2 reference

I went into the scanner and it did say that the firmware had downloaded to it
