problems

I understand your problems . I to did the big jump from the 1980 scanners. It has been 2 weeks almost and I seem to have all my programmed stuff screwed up some and never could use the help/open software manual. I am still working on that and lots of other stuff I turn on . The manual isn't very easy to understaand. I noticed it is good at telling how to turn stuff on and not how to turn it off.I am scanning stuff I don't want.
I just try to remember when I got my ar2500 new. I had problems then and got it worked out .
It is kind of like pulling out in traffic. Be patient and you'll find a spot.

Good for you! I knew you'd get the hang of it with a little bit of reading, and what a feeling you get when it all falls into place, right??

I use freescan on my 396T and like you said, turning the scroll button all the time can get tiresome.

Enjoy your new scanner....

It's all good

Yes Russell this thing rocks. Only thing I am finding a problem with FreeScan is it downloads some frequencies that are birdies or like birdies. Then I have to go find them in the scanner and pull them. Is there a way on free Scan to manually pull one frequency?

I probably have spent the last 48 hours (just got up few hours ago) non stop on that thing learning it. I will burn my self out until I have got to the point where I am happy of level of learning experience. I prefer to learn as fast a possible.

One other thing I notice with this scanner (might be a bug) with priority on . When it goes back to a priority channel the priority option on, is causing tx (Transmitting radio) sound choppy. If I turn off priority They sound just fine.

Any idea's on this one people?

I expect these little problems as I go. this is no big deal. Just wondering if anyone has answers to these new issues I ran into

Hi and welcome back to scanning! It must be a real time warp for you, I can only imagine.

The hiccup you experience with the priority on is a problem with all scanners. The radio has to sample the other frequency that you have designated as a "priority" and since there is only one receiver in there, it has to stop and sample the priority channel every two seconds (or however long, it can be different with each model and brand).

However, since you have two scanners now, if the frequency you want to sample as a priority is an analog frequency, why not punch that into the Pro-106 and keep an ear on it that way? Then there will be no hiccup sound. I'm not sure about priority for trunking systems, as neither of my trunking scanners have that option (Uniden BC780XLT & BC396T).

Have fun!

thanks jim

you guys are the best!

I should be done bugging everyone for today!! .

That was a relief. I had that theory in the back of my head also because every time the the "pri' flashes on the stopped frequencies when people are talking, would when the problem would occur. Turning off the "pri" and the the prob would go away.

Funny how you find new hidden things trying to trouble shoot one problem. I did not know my main knob was also my function knob by holding it in for a few seconds. This gets me to the hot key short cuts under the keys on the keypad. !

I am ready to solo I think. Any more problems. I'll read forums first to see if problem has been asked and answered already and if not then I'll open a new thread. Still tired. Got this radio about week 1/2 ago and probably slept a few days since then. Love radio's always have and always will. But this one is the most complex one I have ever had and still allot to learn.

you guys the best. I have this amature mastered!

All thanks to your replies.

just awoke from that snooze. went back to free scan.. notice in the drop down menu to the right I can program everything before uploading to scanner such as tone, tone volume, LCD color, LCD blink rate. check for common frequencies i know will stop and bother me and DELETE them.

It's all gravy from here.

Now to help others. This not so hard. Thanks for holding my hand everyone! Kind of embarrassing but I was almost ready to return it. Glad I cried first!!

Good point there Jim! With the Priority. I have one scanner on the Left and one on the right! Who needs Priority! Amazing what the brain can do with some sleep.

Now to do this the right way for the last time. I have probably cleared the uniden banks about 12 times and started over. Now that I fully understand Free Scan I'm all good.

O.k. I lied!

Wow I now have almost 1000 frequencies programmed in.

I have mastered conventional.
Today I took a bite at trunking downloading and what a difference!

I have all the IL Tollway Authorities, And all the prisons in the State. And they all are work and so far and sound crystal clear compared to conventional! I also notice Digital scans allot faster, I mean allot faster. Now I can't wait for things to go digital.

Death to convention!! Although I know some things will stay convention!! I am on starcom21 and Motorola II in Digital.

One mistake though. I need to go back into Free Scan and up the delay a couple more seconds. It's so fast to take off and scan again. I usually leave it at 3 on conventional but I left it default on digital of 2, to fast.

I"m out of here.

This Radio rules. Is there a better one out there when I out grow this one. Don't answer that, that could lead to a divorce. I believe this radio holds 29,000 channels but I could be wrong. would have to look at the specs again but at close to a thousand frequencies Free Scan says I am only at 4% internal memory on the radio. Wow. I'll worry about a new radio when I can fill up 29,000 frequencies.

Hey Hexmaster:

Now you've got it!! It's good to hear that you're enjoying that scanner and doing it all by yourself.

That's 25,000 channels and now you're worried about filling it up?? I don't know what out there is going to beat the 996XT (at least not at the present time) but if you need additional capacity why not just get a second one? Let's see you fill up 2 of them!

Happy scanning to you....

I can't belive how far I have come. check it out

No where near filling this thing up yet. But if I don't stop anytime soon this month or next I might run into a problem living in such a populated area with military bases two major air ports tons of other stuff I have found.

Tonight I Thanks to Free Scan I put all this in with my key board in about a half hour. If it where the knob, the radio would be outdated by the time I where done. This is all air craft and I have already got a few hits.

I know their are more air craft freqs out there. Still in trial and error mode but it's getting so much easier and less mistakes. There is a hit right now! Static but I can hear them, need to get a base antenna up out side!

Just letting you guys know all that typing back payed of for me and was not a waist of time.

Push almost 2,000 freq's. now. I am wanting my ham license even more now.

Re:Help

Hi--You should of purchased the Uniden Home Patrol One....you just punch in the zip codes and that is basically it. It can also be updated weekly, monthly, etc. Scanners have become more complex but not due to 9-11 but rather trunking and APCO 25. I am in Westchester County in New York and here they just started trunking about 2 years ago for mainly working structure fires. About 3 police departments are digital..the rest analog. You also have the new FCC law that goes into effect 1/1/13 for the new narrow banding format on VHF/UHF. Listen, don't give up. You can call Scanner Master in Massachusetts and ship it to them and they will set it up for your area for about $69.00 and I know it seems like a scam but that radio and also the BC-15X is hard to program by hand so dude, your not the only one. If you have any further questions, we can talk online here at first but your not even close to my area. Sorry!

keeping this thread because cook county --

in Chicago already switched along with many other to star com but only Cook is Encrypted all of it including all suburbs. I tried it today can't even get static on any thing and their are thousands of freq's!

No that does not sound like a burn at all. I used to do c.b's and take my paychecks to the radio shops but the feds busted them all. I quite all that anyways. They have been in town!!

Yes that thought has already gone trough my mind. I know someone out there can do it. Not a big deal plenty else to listen to. funny tho I can still pick up the state police in Cook county that's it. Strange.

Just added another 1,000 freq's I am done for the night gonna sit back and listen.

Thanks for the F.Y.I. I don't care third e-mail. send that would you. "" if you want.

That is important stuff for me. yes I'll drop $70 into it. IL was supposed to have done this last Jan 1 but I think funds cut them short.
