I have a BCD996P2. Today, I picked up a BCD996XT, to take some monitoring burden off the P2.

Looking at the Band/Frequency coverage that both share. Does one do better than the other on specific Bands/Frequencies? I'm aware only the P2 monitors digital Phase 2, and with firmware enhancements, can receive DMR, and Provoice.

Also, how do both of them compared to the BCT15X for analog monitoring, specifically commercial and military aircraft bands?

The 996p2 can do DMR as well? Never knew it was upgradeable like that. Thought I would've had to get the lastest Whistlers TRX or BCDx36HP scanners. Good to know.

There is no NXDN upgrade for Uniden scanners, nor has anything been posted as to whether or not one is forthcoming. If you need NXDN in a scanner (as opposed to using an SDR), then your only choices are the Whistler TRX-1 and TRX-2.

Definitely a hard choice, NXDN just got added to my area and seems active now. I'll read up on both in the wiki thanks.

The AOR AR-DV1B wideband communications receiver covers 100 kHz to 1300 MHz (less cellular on U.S. consumer "B" version) in traditional analog modes (SSB, CW, AM, FM, S-FM, W-FM) as well as various digital modes. In fact, we know of no other radio in this category that can decode Icom's D-Star™ mode, Yaesu's new C4FM mode, Alinco's digital mode, NXDN™ (note: 6.25 kHz only), P25 Phase 1, DMR (Tier 1 Tier 2 modes, unencrypted), dPMR, etc. Interesting features include: 2000 Memories (in 40 banks of 50), Memory Scan, AM Synchronous Detection, Noise Reduction, Notch, Digital Data Display, Clock, Calendar, Alarm, Timer. The backlit display may be adjusted as well as the color of the backlighting on the keys. Multiple tuning steps are available: 10, 50, 100, 500 Hz, 1, 2, 5, 6.25, 7.5, 8.33, 9, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 3, 50, 100 and 500 kHz. Multiple bandwidths may be selected: FM 200, 100, 30, 15 and 6 kHz., AM 15, 8, 5.5 and 3.8 kHz., SSB 2.6 and 1.8 kHz., CW 500 or 200 Hz.

I looked at one of those before on eBay. Lot's of overseas dealers in Singapore and the like that way you get full frequency coverage and the voice descrambler works. Still hear a bit of scrambling on MURS at times. I really like the TRX-1 handheld it looks decent.

Be careful, I have read that AOR (US) will not service, or honor the warranty of those sourced from other countries.

I'd have to have a very strong desire, or need to monitor those other modes, to pay that kind of money in order to do so.

Exactly. The AOR unit is not a trunking scanner, and at the cost that Universal is asking for it, you could buy both a TRX-1 or -2, plus your choice of four Uniden models- BCD325P2, BCD996P2, BCD436HP, or BCD536HP, and have enough change left to do the DMR upgrade.

Well this thread went off track. Back to the original question, does anyone have any true comparisons between the two, and which performs best and in which bands?

Thanks for your input. That's pretty much my findings as well. The 996P2 is my primary/local scanner, and I picked up a less expensive 996XT to dedicate to Michigan State Police to take some of the interruption off the 996P2. I monitor aircraft on a BCT15X Everything is working great!

Agree as well - also have it's baby brother a 325.

Best feature is the USB interface and C-Ch out (for me). I use one for Pro96Comm for analyzing , though it rarely does go in the pocket for air shows or events.

Have DMR installed and works fine, but all I get is some business and school buses (no interest for me).
