Hello everyone, I'm new to the site and have a question I was hoping someone could enlighten me on, but first I wanna say what a great site this is. Not to suck up too much, but I remember the last time I went online to look for frequencies to use on my scanner (5 or so years ago) there was nothing out there, so when I just picked up my 2nd scanner ever the other day off eBay it was nice to find such a resourceful site as this one. But enough of that onto my issue...

I have the BCT8 which I'm sure everyone is aware does Motorola analog trunking (or tracking, or whatever the correct term is), which is great because one of the main reasons I got the scanner was to listen to the radios where I work which use just such a system. Heres the link for it:

http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&sid=2828

Now the problem is that, from what I've researched, my scanner is indeed compatible with this system but for some reason when I follow the manual for setting everything up, I get an error message on the scanner while trying to input the frequencies. It wont take them. With a little more searching I found a few posts to the Yahoo Uniden group that mention the BCT8 can only do trunking in the 800mhz range and not in the 900s. Now this I guess makes sense as the system is labeled 'E2-800' on the scanner display, but I'm just curious if anyone knows why the scanner wont work in the 900mhz range. I know the scanner can listen to these frequencies as I can listen to them conventionally, and I know I set it up correctly, as I have two of the other five banks on the radio set to Motorola type II systems in the 800mhz range, so those aren't the problem.

It seems to me with my somewhat limited technical knowledge that the only thing blocking it from working is that damn error message as theres no other reason it shouldn't be able to work. That one does use the same system as, say, this one, doesn't it? I can hear that one just fine. So if theres no difference then why did Uniden not allow trunking on 900mhz on the BCT8? I know that question might not really be answerable but it just doesn't make sense to me. Also is there some kind of software solution to get around it or maybe new firmware?

I'm really hoping someone here can explain this to me. Conventional listening is what I'm doing now which isn't too bad but being able to keep it locked on my department's channel would be so much better. Thanks.

BCT8 BearTracker™ Warning System with 800 MHz TrunkTracker III :(

That tells me that it was built to track Only 800 Mhz Trunking plus Conventional Frequencies. To add 900 Mhz Trunking would require additional circuitry, at additional cost.

As for the name, I understand that, but I'm just wondering if it really would take additional circuitry since it seems like the only difference is a slight frequency change. Basically I'm just hoping for some understanding. Whats the point of them making it 800mhz only? (Besides possible marketing purposes where they can charge more for the 900mhz.) Back when the BCT8 came out was there no trunking systems in the 900s and therefore back then saying "800 MHz TrunkTracker" was all encompassing? Or maybe it has to do with the cellular band being between them separating the way they get processed internally by the electronics as you suggest, I don't know. I suppose I'm just hoping some guru here would know definitively so I didn't have to wonder...
