• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have a BC 980. It's receiving with no problem.

I checked all of my settings over n over. Just can't talk to anyone.

Radio about 4 years old. All lights work.

Antenna is a Stryker, about 2 years old.

Mic is brand new, factory Bearcat.

Any tips

Haven’t used my U980 in a long while (can’t remember if all these present):

Mic gain turned up?

RF power turned up?

Other microphones work okay?

Coax tight in SO-239? (And at antenna).

Nothing loose on antenna (coax not broken/crushed).

Indicator on panel shows RF output?

Voltage Meter shows change at key-up?

Wiggle mic cord to look for changes

Wiggle coax to look for changes.

(Don’t hold key down if “short circuit” found).

Update - although I'm not finished.

Coaxial cable was fine

I unscrewed the base of the antenna, lots of moisture was present. Dryer it out, cleaned it, and put Dielectric grease on it.

More updates soon

might as well buy new coax.and use that self vulcanizing rubber tape .wrap from bottom of pl 259 where it goes to antenna. then when thats done use 3M tape and wrap from bottom up again but go oppisite direction you went with the rubber tape.

I hear a lot of the Stryker antenna's get water in them and short out... I wonder if that killed the transmit part of the radio??

if you got a late 980 and screen is good i got a 980 that transmits fine but screen died down to where its worthless in my truck id prolly part with for a few $$$.
my new McKinly came in last nite and will remove the 980 this week.
i think its just an undo ribbon cables and few screws n back in buisness. if you can press a button and shut beep off its new version
