Is the cable connected to the scanner front port?
In the Device Manager, see if COM6 shows in the Ports section.

Did you in Free Scan assign it to Comm port 6 ?
At the read from Scanner square - Thats when you click on the radio with the Down arrow !
In the middle there is a square with the commport and speed if you click on that you can re assign it.
The USB to Com Port adaptor you have may not be USB Version Compatable with your version of Windows ?
You could test the adaptor in Hyperterminal and see if it picks it up there.

What version of Windows are you trying to do this in ?

Just some idea's

Hi if I remember correctly you cant have connection above Com 4 in Freescan ? I am not 100% sure here
Try remove all other ports restart PC and in Device Manager check what Com ports you got.
Long shot but worth trying
