Limited? It has the entire radioreference db. Read its specs and what Paul opitz says. It is both. The only difference with other scanners is the displayed data. It is also p25 capable.

C'mon Milf: don't be dense. You and I both know limited refers to the ability of the user to access and modify the public safety reception capability of this CB.
Limited does not refer to how many kilobytes the database is nor the reception modes available.
This is still a CB period.
I believe your and my definition of a scanner are worlds apart. You fall into the camp of this being a dual scanner/CB. Uniden, myself and many others believe this to be a CB with limited public safety reception capability.
I guess we will just agree to disagree.

Actually..... it does not. It ONLY uses the PRIMARY dispatch channels. It does NOT have any of the TAC or secondary channels in it.

It's not a scanner. How many times does that need to be said? It is a CB with limited public safety monitoring capability.
It is a CB. A citizens band radio.
Comparing it to any scanner is ridiculous.

Somebody had a bowl of CrankyFlakes this morning. I was responding to scosgt comment. Neither of us have ignored the fact that it is primarily a CB radio.

Comparing it to a scanner, any scanner is not at all ridiculous. For crying out loud, Uniden's own product page advertises the unit as a "Hybrid CB Radio/Digital Scanner!" It's both according to the people that built the darn thing.

I'm with Milf on this one. It's a scanner too.

Whatever it is (CB and/or scanner), I don't see any hyped up people posting unboxing videos this weekend. People should have them in hand by now..

No. It is monitoring the input side of the actual repeaters being used where you are. It is not checking vehicle repeater freq's at all.

It monitors the input-side of the repeater for trunked, too.

I've been pondering this one for a while. If a community/county/state has multiple services on their trunked system, wouldn't this result in a lot of false activiations?

a) It is a floor wax and a desert topping.
b) I've not found falses from trunked systems to be a big issue, but actually don't really recommend BWS use in cities. BWS is really most useful out on the open road, where most activity on such systems will more likely be some kind of public safety.

What kind of antenna would be recommended for the CB side of this unit? I really don't want a big clunky magnetic antenna. And, is there a mount that could be installed to slide the unit in and out of your car without messing with the wires?

Pardon my ignorance, but do these entries from the 885 specifications imply the unit is capable of SSB (even if it is not yet supported)?

The references to USB and LSB were a transcription error by the O/M group. Fixing as running change.

Add a New talkgroup?

My 885 is in the mail, I downloaded the bt885_update_manager but can't open anything til I get the sd that came with it.. I guess..
Question? I know the radioreference michigan public service database does not have our county fire dispatch talkgroup. Will I be able add to this to the "updated" database using the update manager?

No, but you can submit the change to the RadioReference database, and once added it will be available to Update Manager on the following update, usually the next Monday.

I assume that 885 won't pick up other radio services, such railroad or amateur radio. If the 885 was around 20 years ago, I would Bought one. That Radio looks like real winner, especially with the ability to monitor public safety and public works. Knowing if that radio was capable of scanning the AAR Channel and Maritime VHF Channels, I would bought consider buying one.

Beartracking - How well does it work in what areas?

My question is - "Beartracking" - what states are still using the low frequency repeaters that these go off on? How well does it work in Texas/Oklahoma - does it still work now that a lot of state highway patrol have gone to P25 systems?
