The land of broken calculators.
That is the funniest article and the best laugh I have had all day.

You HAVE TO READ that article!
here's a taste...
"actually being required now that law enforcement go to a UHF radio system. It’s a more secured and narrow frequency. The jump from VHF to UHF means old scanners won’t work soon — your old $70 VHF scanner would have to become a $150 UHF digital scanner if you want to keep listening to what police are up to."

Kudos to them for spending a tiny fraction of the national average for a new radio system but something tells me they haven't got the foggiest idea of what they just bought.

Oh boy...

Don't let people in power or journalists write about radios. They're should be a law against that.

I agree. I was going to quote the story...but it got funnier and funnier. But, I am glad the UHF is narrowband and securer now days....LOL.

And, where does this guy think grant money comes from? Taxpayers....just not all from local taxpayers.

I wonder if they think they are going on the SIRN system, it's UHF, by simply buying UHF radios? Surely this is just bad writing. There has to be more to this story, as far as the technical details.

I was confused too as to what system they are operating on. Nothing about repeaters (can't do it for that price) and nothing about SIRN. Anyone know what's going on? Hopefully it's not simplex!!!

And it also tore me up about the tax-payer money vs. grant money comment. Where do they think the grant money comes from?

Somebody made a comment in the WV SIRN 2013 thread saying they expected Raleigh County to be on the SIRN within a few weeks. That would correspond with the timeline in the article. If what they are buying for the sheriff's department is a UHF digital system, and the only expense is the radios and not repeaters, then I'd say it is highly likely that they are going to use the existing SIRN network.

In the article they mention towers all over WV, so I would guess that it will be on the SW network - but 1k per radio, installed, P25 trunking? Not sure what in the world they are selling at that price, unless they did the old "yes, these radios are P25 CAPABLE, but you have to get the extra firmware to do that - for only XXX.XX dollars."
