Been doing my homework, now need some input from other people on first time purchases

I bought an Yaesu 857d with tuner and a 1:1 balun :)

I am studying for the license. I hope to be able to pass Technician and General in one sitting.

in the mean time I will see what I can l listen with some antennas I hope to jury rig/ build.

already thinking of how I can use some trees in yard

Buy used from someone you trust. Don't go crazy and spend a lot. At this point you may not know what aspect of ham radio you want to pursue so go easy.
Look for a used IC735 or Kenwood 440 in the $350 range for HF
Look at an inexpensive 2 meter only mobile in the $50 range.
That should get you started, don't look at the ads on QST, those pretty pictures will do severe damage to your credit card!!
