Okay, so spending some time watching OSU vs Arizona today, and playing with the 396XT... Someone was spreading a rumor that Benton County was using conventional P25 on and off... well, today it seems to have been off.

However, what I find interesting is that I'm hearing both the dispatcher and the mobile units on both the reported repeater input and output frequencies. On the input side, I'm not seeing any tone; on the output side I'm seeing several different DCS tones (143, 174, 205 are the ones that stick out in my mind).

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason (at least to me) which tone is used for which unit; I heard both 400 and 800 units and they all came up with the various different tones; the dispatcher when responding always used the same tone as the unit they were responding to.

Anyone shed any light? I'd like to get the benton county database cleaned up...

Someone chimed in on one of my other posts and said Benton Co will be going all Digital in Fall of this year. I was in the WA forum but I could find nothing at that time that said they were. Could the Benton Counties (WA & OR) be getting mixed up in peoples posts? I don't see any Dig listed for either in the RRDB and I've had no problem hearing Benton Co WA when I'm there. Thanks for all you do here Joe.

The three different rx DCS codes are for the three repeaters that are uses in Corvaills area. The 143 DCS rx tone is for the Vinyard repeater that Corvallis PD uses and the other two DCS rx tones are for other two repeaters used in area. The other repeaters are in Wren and North East Albany. Benton county and Corvaills use 155.490 and there are 4 repeater sites that benton county has on 155.490. The 155.490 repeaters are mix/mode repeaters which means p25 can be used at any time on any repeater, but most all of the time there in the clear. 154.340 is fire repeater used county wide and has repeater on Vinyard for city and Marys Peak for rural areas.RX tone for 154.340 167.9.

Anyone know what would be the point (purpose) of using
P25 sometimes and analog at other times?

Are they testing, or are they attempting to limit reception of certain transmissions?
or are the P25 radios only in some vehicles?
or are they switching back to analog when necessary to overcome a poor transmission on digital?

Some other reason?
Who makes the decision to use P25 at a given moment? Dispatch or the Mobile?
Why not full time P25?
I'm puzzled.

BTW - Anyone know anything about this?

"Linn and Benton Counties plan to acquire and deploy two 700
megahertz (MHz) communications sites to support a trunked radio system that will serve over
40 agencies, including all of the local fire and law enforcement agencies, county and city public
works departments, local transportation functions, and Oregon State University (OSU)"
.

I found the info in this document:

It's certainly possible. I don't follow much from Washington (although I do check the forum out once in a while, and will catch the odd submission that Lowboy misses...) so can't speak to what may or may not be happening there.

I'm still confused by why I was hearing both sides of the conversation (more often than not, but not 100% of the time) on both the repeater inputs and outputs.

The digital thing is just a "bonus" - i had read somewhere that Benton County was using P25, but had never heard it...

I've added some info that I found while doing some research on this to the wiki.

From what I've been able to gather, it's merely a side-effect of an infrastructure upgrade that occurred; the new repeaters and portable/mobile subscribers are P25 capable. Everyone seems to be happy with using analog, so they haven't changed over.

Are they testing, or are they attempting to limit reception of certain transmissions?
or are the P25 radios only in some vehicles?
or are they switching back to analog when necessary to overcome a poor transmission on digital?
Don't think #1 applies at all; #2 might apply in some cases, and #3 would be likely, if they were primarily on digital to begin with.

I'm puzzled.

I'm puzzled too, and can only speculate that they have special orders come down from the chief's office (or something like that) that say "we're going to test the digital side of the radios today". From what I've been able to gather, the radios have both a conventional analog bank and a conventional P25 bank, and the repeaters will pass both.

Not using digital full time may have to do with interoperability with other surrounding agencies.

It's probably a part of OWIN. But thanks for that link, that's an interesting document...

Yamhill county wanted to do the same thing around 10 years ago (trunked 700MHz), but they lacked the funds to pull it off. I wonder how Linn and Benton counties can afford this now, help from the feds?
