im looking for the best handheld antenna ... im looking for the best range to pull in mostly air show types . both for in air plane comms and also for all the multiple ground crew channels working it. more specifically for EAA ( if anyone is aware of what that is)

If you are at the air show the antenna that came with the scanner are more than you'll ever need.
The airplanes are over your head, ground crew are in plain site at the air strip and in the hangars?

Is it some other specific scenario that you use the portable scanner?

the ground crews and also both the towers can be out of range with the normal rubber ducky antenna depending on what side of the airshow you are on. i dont think i run into issues with the planes in the air more the ground comms. and the planes when on the ground. also i do have it on my belt so maybe im partially at fault for the interference.

Try to keep the antenna 2-3 inches away from your body or it will almost shortcircuit and detune the antenna.
Professional radios use belt clip arrangements that tilt the antenna as far away as possible from the body.
