The ones from systems or that are conventional of departments and agencies you enjoy listening to and can receive. The database is full of options.

Seriously, your question is like saying what's the best brand of soda, everyone enjoys something different.

Welcome to the RR forums, that's subject to opinion. What services are you interested in monitoring? Also what receiver(s) do you currently own or are interested in acquiring? Most folks here are primarily interested in emergency services and not much else. Others enjoy military & civilian aviation or railroads. Still others prefer hearing a rousing ragchew on the local ham repeaters. We also have folks here who enjoy business & retail chatter. I personally enjoy a bit of it all. NYC area is one of (if not THE) largest RF environment in the country so there's definitely no shortage of things to tune into.

Original poster, you're going to find some delay in your replies secondary to being a new member. Police fire? Do you have any other special interests like marine radio or Aviation? Military Aviation?

Be more specific than New York City area, are you on Long Island, are you north of the city? West and south and the Jersey Shore have so much good stuff to hear.

As you see you will have people step up and try to narrow this down, I say.. check out the database and get familiar with it and focusing on the counties that you're most interested in and it will be subcategories that you can focus on the interest you have.

If you're looking to hear police as most are.. you'll need to see what is encrypted as far as police go.. in the database, a large E will mean full encrypted and a small e part-time encrypted.

Unfortunately nobody is able to listen to those.

So OP I guess if you've already looked at the database you can see there's a huge number of cities, towns, villages in Westchester County.

I don't live in your area but I took a pretty hard look at the database and it's important to know what kind of radio do you have? What are your capabilities? Do you have a digital radio? Is your radio capable of picking up DMR? Does it work well with simulcast transmissions? What's the model number? What kind of antenna are you using?

One of the things you said you wanted to hear people talking about radios so that would be the subcategory of amateur radio.

I'm not sure what you can pick up from New York City from where you are but I wanted to bring this up in the queue again so maybe someone in Westchester can chime in.

Give us more information, make and model of your radio, exact location, City, Village, Borough, town that you live in.

Okay then, so what you meant was, on post 1, was.. what are the best frequencies to listen to in NYC with a Beofang. That's a horse of a different color, everyone assumes that you have a scanner and you want to listen to what a scanner listens to.

You need a amateur radio operators license to transmit but using the database just look at all the many opportunities to listen to ham operators on the database in Westchester County, you can check New York City too or other counties if you want.

I didn't see Larchmont listed so I'm just going to assume it's on the p25 phase 2 County system, I didn't bother to look it up you can't hear that. Maybe larchmont Village could be on a VHF or UHF channel, I vaguely remember that when I was on Long Island for a while, but I didn't bother to look. Good luck to you.

Point is, I see a bunch of websites that list lots frequencies and privacy codes for non-govt ham frequencies, but so far I've only heard broadcasts only two of them. Its kinda disappointing.

Ham frequencies aren't in use 24/7, most have nets where they are used an hour or two and sit silent for many hours, you might catch some traffic during morning/afternoon drive times, or for short conversations here and there. Many frequencies you see online may have been in use years ago and the lists never updated with new information. Unlike commercial or public safety licenses ham operators aren't limited to a particular frequency, rather a frequency band.

I sugest you take a look at the Westchester County DB Page listed here.

Also, take a look at the Westchester Wiki page to fimularize yourself with the countys operations.

Fire/EMS/PD all operate some sort of anolog conventional and can be recived with the Beofang AR-5RM. I beleve the PD opeartes on Mamoronecks PD Frequency. Fire/EMS dispatch can also be recived with the radio. As far as listening to the Fire/EMS Responce, you will not be able to pick them up natvely from the DES Trunked System. But you may be able to pick up a VHF or UHF Crossband Patch.

As far as Ham Radio, Im not 100% fimular with it. But it can be ative in Westchester. Check the County HAM Radio Page. The activity is there, its just a matter of finding a frequency that is active and the ideal time to listen.

The poster was advised about the database and to check it out, links to it were provided just like you did. The page that listed some locations that still use analog were included for the poster to read. I said to check the subcategory of ham radio where there was a lot available.

Yes there are some bailiwicks that still use analog frequencies but I was looking for Larchmont or something close. Some of those ballywicks may be switching over to the county system. I don't live there, you are familiar with it so thanks for your contribution.

So what you are saying is the poster should take his radio which is sold in this country intended for amateur radio use only and modify it to extend frequency ranges to be able to pick up public service? Eh, everybody does it.

I tried to PM you but you have that turned off. I would never do this on the open forum but didn't appreciate your reaction. Just my two cents.👍
