I just use one of those cassette tape kits for the CD player. Plug one end in to the earphone jack, and the other end in to the tape deck, then the audio comes out of the car speakers. Really cool hearing a scanner in full surround sound. :D I don't know how this compares with some of the other suggestions since I don't have any experience with the other speakers. But this is good enough, and difinately cheap enugh for me. And last but not least, you car speakers ARE amplified, the 96 sounds awesome.

Scanner Speakers

:D

Ditto the comments on the General Electric pre-amped speaker. I use it for my 780. Darn if I can find the part number either. I'll try tomorrow to look it up.

In addition to the on/off switch mentioned, it also has it's own volume control. Bought it as a surplus for $10 when Nextel Analog had a surplus warehouse in Texas. Now I wish I had bought several. Oh well...

Good luck,
Julian

Best speaker?

Before I begin, let me acknowledge that I haven't tested every speaker made - but, what I use is:
Base station - Optimus XTS 25 (Radio Shack - got it free)
Mobile - purchased from Galls SKO 19 ($7.00)

Both give me good sound. The Galls is smaller which works out for my mobile setup. Both have limited frequency responses. I don't like too much bass in a scanner (or other radio) speaker.

The final decision should be based on your ears and operation situation. Over the years, I have use a number of speakers. I like these two.

Good luck!

I also don't like bass in my scanner audio. I usually equalize the bass, but turn the trebble all the way up. Gives it a good classic radio sound, whatever that might be.

I dont use a speaker. I went out and got me a cassette adapeter and a mono-stereo adapter plug and use that in my vehicle. I use the equalizer to get rid of some of the distortion, and also turning the volume down on the scanner helps a lot as well. Then i have 6 speakers that my scanner is coming through and I can make it as loud or quiet as I want. The only real downside is that you cant listen to the AM/FM in this mode, but when listening to a 3 ALM structure fire that tends to make one say "Screw the news/music, I'm listening to this." Of course you can also unplug it from the radio so you can listen to the AM/FM and then plug the scanner back in when interesting stuff starts happening. You may already have one of those cassette adapters so that is less money to spend, another plus!
