This is slightly off topic, but I was listening to call come in recently where a fire was reported at one of the Newport high rises. There was a standard response of 4 engines, 2 ladders, rescue, etc. but I also heard the dispatcher notify a fifth engine and said "Engine 10 please pick up the HRT". Then at the end of the call I heard "Engine 10 out of service, returning the HRT". Does anyone know what the HRT is? And where are they picking it up and returning it to?
Taking a shot but maybe high rise truck/trailer. Been awhile since I looked into newark fire apparatus assignments.

Sad but true.

I blame the internet for the increase in encryption. Scanning is a niche hobby and generally went unnoticed due to the overall small number of users. In the general population there are very few people who are going to drop $400 on a scanner. But with all these free scanner apps, everyone and their mother is now listening. And I think this is why public safety agencies feel more of a threat to privacy than they did 10 years ago when these apps did not exist. I see it on my town's Facebook group all the time. Someone wants to know what happened in town and there is always someone that says "go download the app" or "I heard it on the scanner app".

REMCS at UH EMS will be switching over to NJICS shortly and at least one of our talk-groups will be encrypted.

Reportedly, years ago the County of Bergen based its decision to encrypt the majority of talk groups on their UHF trunked system after an individual who had been taken into custody pulled out his smart phone and showed the arresting Prosecutor's Office detectives how easy it was to monitor them via an app.

Reportedly unless the feed is broadcasting 1 talk group only then maybe. Everyone has an opinion and it is not for this thread.

This thread has outlived it's usefulness, as it's degrading into another fundamental argument/pissing match over encryption.

I remind everyone to read again Lindsey's stickied post that's at the top of every forum page if you need a refresher.

If you really want to go on about this, take it to the Tavern sub-forum...
