I had my BlueDV machine running on a Acer micro laptop. It was smooth, sounded great, showed info on screen, etc.
But....and I never figured out the details....
EITHER
I didnt key up enough to keep something active
OR
The traffic dwindled down to nothing
CAUSING
the exact thing you describe.
My modem/gateway radio is a GD-77. It works flawlessly on Pistar, so I rebooted the Pi3b and it will sit on a quiet talkgroup until traffic pops up. And I will hear it.
You might have to key up more often, to reset some weird timer. I like the software and will recommend it, but I am not active enough to keep it going.
In my case, this started years ago. Since then, I have moved up from the GD-77 to a repeater-builder STM32-DVM on an analog mobile. Fantastic audio reports.
Sorry I cant be of more help than saying key up more, that worked for me. BTW, I was on Brandmeister.
