If you had enough room behind your 996/15, or did a frankestien job and put it inside with the antenna brought to the outside, I wonder if you could make the serial port wirless with this:
Bluetooth® Serial Adaptor > Maplin
There is a small picture of it in the right hand margin.

Doing a little reading in one of the user manuals looks like pairing with a simple Bluetooth GPS reciever may be an issue. Could be a non-starter.
