• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

The land of broken calculators.
and maybe use it for GMRS / MURS. )))

Not to pick nits, I know this is a taboo subject but they are not certified for GMRS or MURS, especially MURS which is far more restrictive in terms of output power.

(((If nothing else, it makes a cheap HT I can leave in my work truck and I'm out $42 if it comes up missing....not $500 to $800 if it's one of my Moto's.)))

You're going to be out several hundred bucks anyway when you have to replace the window that got smashed and clean up all the bits of broken glass that will find its way into every nook and cranny of your vehicle. Don't leave valuables in your vehicle and you won't have to worry about them getting stolen.

(((I'm not aware of it being illegal to sell radios capable of certain frequency ranges, as described. If so, eBay and tons of other websites would be shut down. Sellers have a responsibility to not sell some smuck a radio and program it for him for TX on his local PD. That's why software should not be free and easy. As for as this type, well, there has to be some honor out there. If it's not your system and you don't have a license, then don't transmit. Same issue as FRS/GMRS combo units...I don't see any manufacturers going to jail over that. I have sold use equipment before, I won't program it for them, they have to go to the shop...then if they are not authorized, the shop won't program it. )))
I've run into a situation in the past where a radio shop would not even program GMRS frequencies. They didn't even know what GMRS was.

You're not going to see dealers "going to jail" for selling an end user non-certified radios or for programming mistakes or programming business customers onto FRS frequencies with their high powered radios but they do open themselves up to civil lawsuits when the end user gets in trouble for it or encounters some interference that is detrimental to their operations.

I know.

It's a work truck full of tools and materials, they eventually get broke into, dealt with windows many times, can't empty a $30,000 truck with $50,000 worth of stuff on it each night.

I concur.

I'm perfectly happy with the UV-5R that I bought for 40$ shipped from Amazon. It is a little complex process to program but not hard once you get it. As far as broadcasting in channels your not allowed to just don't do it. As far as relying on a 40$ radio for emergency work that makes about as much sense as ____ on a bull.

Quarterwave--Exactly.. now you are 100% correct. This is why I keep sending back LG Extravert to Verizon Wireless as working out on Long Island for Hurricane Sandy just last week and the week before...i was getting alot of dropped calls and in fact..2 days ago while I was here in Westchester County....I couldn't make 911 calls on my cell as it is a piece of garbage. LG please take note of this as you make great HDTV's.I now have to go back to a factory refurbished Samsung Brightside. Why does this company give people give its customers the run around? You have to be professional but be assertive with them or you get nothing. If I am miss-posting.....please start a proper thread on cell phones and the junk that is made out there.
Thanks again and hope you had a good Thanksgiving too.
