The Border 2 Fire is burning this evening near the top of Mt Otay. It is currently around 600 acres and there are two copters continuing to work it making steady progress.

We had about 10 tankers earlier from both Ramona and San Bernardino bases including Tanker 912 (DC-10).

I heard 10K also used mostly the strike teams coming and going to the incident also if they can't get out on the VHF, and if that fire was arson I hope who ever did it gets arrested..

Fire estimate blew up to 4200 acres this morning although the line seems to be holding. Air attack 330 is getting back on scene.

153.995 - XSD CMD 3 (Border Command)
151.265 - CDF CMD 2
159.27 - CDF A/G 5

IC is still on XSD CMD 3 but San Diego is telling air attack that command channel is CDF CMD 2. IC isn’t answering on CDF CMD 2 or CDF A/G 5 so hopefully they all get in touch with each other again soon.

I was hearing Air Tactics 21 this morning but they might have switched over since.

151.2725 - Air Tactics 21
122.925 - Air to Air

I'm currently monitoring the Otay 1 camera on Mt. Otay in San Diego, CA (link to view camera provided below inside the quote).

Alert California cameras:

If you set the playback to 12 hours and adjust it to 18:05:35.83 (2024/01/27), you'll notice what appear to be sparks of electricity jumping from various spots near the electrical/communication towers.

Could this be what caused the fire to start? Perhaps there's a loose wire in the area creating all this activity. Does anyone have the chance to investigate?

Hopefully you guys have time to catch it, because I don't think there is a way to view very old footage after 12 hrs?

The real northern california
Those are airplanes - approach and departure for KSAN is right there across the northern face of Otay. Otay 1 was at 31deg bearing, so looking right into the flight path and class B airspace. Cross reference your timing with FlightRadar24 archive times (1800PST -> 0400 UTC) and you can see your flights. Southwest Airlines I believe really lights up their planes when in Class B airspace so your 1805 shot was likely SWA324 departing SAN to HOU. Scroll forward a bit more through 11pm and you'll see a bunch more flights coming and going.

No powerlines at that angle in that viewshed.
