They have several UHF frequencies that are listed as District Repeaters. They are repeated and both digital and analog. When I got my SDS200 a couple of years ago I didn't program them in since I never heard anything on them. Or, the few transmissions I heard were P25, but encrypted.

I'll have to add 6&7 back in and give a listen.

The SNE Boston Fire page lists channels 6 & 7. I believe they are in current radios.

Do they really not have channel 5 in their radios?
From a logistical standpoint, there's no need. It's a station alerting tool-you only know it's active if your station is the one that has received the activation tones. If you're on the air, you are expected to be monitoring, answer fire alarm if they call and have a general situational awareness. I understand it could be a nice option for some of the more "enthusiastic" members to be able to listen, but operationally, especially with earlier radios, the ability to use the memory for a different frequency that could have use beyond monitoring would be much more valuable.

There was a short period of time after the new CAD system went on line where they stopped transmitting alarms on Channel 5. Everything in station can be done via that CAD system as I recall. As you say, it's nice to be able to monitor that, but it's a convenience not a requirement.

Speaking of F 5, sitting at my desk I am listening a steady string of alarms. Mostly medicals, but a building collapse down town as well.

I was reading the article that was posted and saw that microwave links would be the back end. I thought that microwaves as the back end and interconnect was on its way out, and was being taken down and replaced with things live fiber. What would be the motivation for BFD to build out a new system with microwaves on the backend? And not use something like fiber which from what I can tell is preferred in new systems I've seen built out.

Because they can have control over the backhaul and can make it robust. Fiber is very fragile.

We will utilize fiber and microwave and at some locations both

HUH??? I am so confused. What is wncrypted? Is that encrypted? None of what you are asking makes any sense. Perhaps just slow down a notch and check that the spelling is correct.
