Shelbyville Fire

Shelbyville Fire Department is out on a working fire inside the Knauf factory in Shelbyville. Sounds like the fire is about knocked down and mop-up is beginning. Treating one employee for smoke inhalation.

Traffic on 159.195MHz SFD repeater.

Shelbyville Fire working structure fire in storage building

Shelbyville Fire Department is working a structure fire in a rental storage building near Miller Ave & Hale Rd. Radio traffic on 159.195 repeater.

First in units encountered a frozen hydrant and had to lay line to another hydrant further from the scene to continue operations.

(Update 22:28) - water supply issues appear to be resolved, fire attack restored

(Update 23:40) - sounds like the fire is mostly under control and all that's left is the dirty work

They are at the storage bldg on Miller Ave. I'm not sure if your talking about the Fire they are on now, or something earlier. They are not at Knauf
There radio traffic sounds like S**T. Worthless bunch of goofs.
I'm glad I don't live over there.

Right. The Knauf fire was ten days ago, back when I made that post.

Admittedly, the communications were a little chaotic at times, though certainly not the worst I've ever heard from a fire scene. "Worthless" is a pretty strong word for guys who are out in the freezing weather in the middle of the night risking life and limb to save someone else's property.

I'm glad I don't live over there.

So are those of us who do...

I didn't look at the post time. That was my fault.

As far as the worthless part.....Where you listening to the Bat 2 so called Command?
What a joke. That was just about the worst I have ever heard. I know all about the importance
of the risking life for others. I do it myself. Both in law Enforcement and Fire EMS.

I would hope that tonight is a lesson to them, and that they realize that even though Fires seldom
happen over there the radio training still needs to be done.
I heard several four letter words from one of the attack crew members.
I guess that was his was of saying... Hey worthless Command out there get me some water started.

Shelbyville is still that small little town with big politics.
Hell, I remember sitting in a parking lot when I was 18 and drinking Bud Light and waving at the officers
when they drove by. I knid of miss it. LOL

WRTV Channel 6 news at 11PM was reporing one person died at the Hospital tonight from the accident on I-69 at the 8MM. Also ISP has determined that low visability was the cause of the accident along with slick roads in the area at the time of the accident.

Aside from the obvious problem of agencies using different radio systems with no interoperability provisions, there are possible problems even if everybody was using the same system.

Here is some wild speculation on my part, but let me make some guesses:

1. With so many agencies involved, some users didn't have the talkgroups already programmed in their radios that were being used at the scene. The SAFE-T radio that I used to have had TGs for all of the surrounding counties plus all of the mutual TGs. This is a planning and training issue.

2. So many talkgroups were in use at once (police, fire, EMS, EMA, INDOT, etc.) that some users were getting bonked because the closest tower didn't have enough channel capacity. This has been a problem on large events in the past and Incident Commanders need to keep in mind that the system has finite capacity.

3. The cold temperatures reduced battery capacity. On a large incident, the Incident Commander needs to assign a Logistics Officer who is tasked with maintaining a supply of charged batteries.

4. The high winds made wind noise in the microphones a problem. Don't know if much can be done about this.

What other possible issues did I miss?

It really seems like most SAFE-T users have insufficient training to use the system to the fullest of its capability. This kind of incident is exactly what SAFE-T was intended for, so that lots of agencies can work together without radios getting in the way. But everybody stays on their own TG's and acts like the interop capabilities such as MA TG's don't even exist. They might as well still all be on separate VHF freq's.

Hell, if they were on different VHF freq's they wouldn't have this problem.
