• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hi everyone, new to the Forum. I've browsered the threads and tried my best to roam around Google before I post.

I work as an off-road/expedition guide. In our team we use various radios and mainly conventional only. Normally I use my Hytera PD UHF that works just fine. But this time some of the partners we are working with use VHF (zodiac staff) so I'm thinking running my APX8000 (get it from a friend, no encryption, no trunking information, and no tag :/).

I contacted the Motorola APX team to ask the question and they (hesitantly) tell me using ASTRO radios somewhere else should not be a problem. But just wanna be sure that it doesn't cost me a radio when I try to pass the border to Norway. Anyone with experience of bringing APX globally?

For the reference, we are mainly working on polar regions. That's also another reason why I wish to use APX instead of anything else.

Insofar as to what freqs you can use, you may need to contact the US Embassy in Norway to see if they can help you. I know for government business, the RSO (Regional Security Officer) would be the point of contact, but I don't know if that would be the case for non-government business.

In some countries, the RSO, at the respective US Embassy, has a block of freqs that he/she can temporary authorized to US visitors, but I believe it will only be 800 MHz freqs.

On my yearly trip to Canada from Florida I always bring a few Moto radios with me. But I only bring tagged radios, & I carry a copy of my FCC ham radio license. But every country has different laws on importing items. Many years ago when I lived in Canada, when I’d cross the border going to the US, I’d stop at Canadian Customs first to show them I had a CB radio in my car before leaving Canada. They’d come to the car, & copy the model, & serial # onto a green card which they’d give to me. This way when I drove back to Canada, I’d have proof I didn’t just buy that radio in NY for a lot less $ than Canada. So every border is different. Oh, I never bring my APX8K across the border. I bring a 4000 which I can afford to lose.

I used to bring some expensive camera gear with me to Caribbean and would go to US customs at the airport to get a form with serial numbers etc to prove its origin in the US so that upon returning it would not be assessed any import duty. However radio equipment may pose a problem when entering customs in a foreign country as it may be a controlled item in that country. You really need to contact Norway and perhaps explain that you are transporting equipment through the country as opposed to sing it there. Having an amateur radio license sometimes reduces the concern about radio equipment.
