Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

APX 8500 Data Port to Dispatch Headset Jack

I need some assistance.

I am looking to set up a Motorola APX 8500 as a dispatch radio in a temporary configuration to use with a Plantronics headset.
My department underwent a remodel once and when the main consoles were removed we were able to use Ericsson Orion radios in our makeshift dispatch center. The radio techs were able to use the data port on the back of the radio to connect a jack so the operators could use their headsets. They also wired in a foot pedal for PTT and connected an external speaker so no traffic was lost if the headset was unplugged.

We now have Motorola radios and the need has come up for us to do it again. I am now in the role of radio shop tech and am curious if anyone has ever accomplished such a thing. I have the radio pinout diagram for the APX 8500 but I am having a hard time locating a suitable headset jack. I still have one of the old Orion setups somewhere but they use an old plug style so I am unable to replicate the wiring. Dispatch currently uses the Plantronics SHS1890-310 6-wire amplifier with PTT.

I have tried Googling and looking through the threads here on RR but I am coming up with nothing. I know someone out there has to have done it before, I just need a push in the right direction.

Lookup the accessories for the MCD5000 Remotes. I built a similar box for a customer using those parts. The Headset Jack and Foot Pedal both came with RJ45 on the end. Interface box and a little wire doesn't take that long.
