Just received the BC396t.
Until I can hook myself up w/ some software, I want to know if its even possible to program the Burlington County TRs's by hand. Yeah, I've never programmed a TRS before, but I figure i'd give it a shot anyway :>0 I started out with the Burlco West system.
As you probably guessed it didnt work :{ . I started out with the Burlco West system. Oh well it was fun trying and now I'm trying to figure out where I went wrong. So I have some questions:

--By the way I appologize in advance for the lengthiness of this message, but I want to provide all info necessary to answer questions. Believe me, it was quite an adventure :)

1. On the BC396t, are the Burlington County TRS's considered Mot P25 systems or Mot UHF systems?

2. If its Mot P25, how come my 396 doesnt offer the option of CC only programming.

3. I've put the frequency band plan , I guess?? :( in the appropriate place (I guess??) under where it says "Edit System Band Plan" under "Edit System Options". Is there something else I have to do with that information.

** So, okay, I actually ended up trying to program the system two different ways. I made one system as a Mot P25 system, entering all freqs including all control channels, the band plan, and all talkgroups specific to that area. When scanning I heard nothing, only saw ID SCAN or SEARCH (Depending on which one i was doing). Every once in a while I saw LNK come up, but when I held on that channel nothing happened. When holding on to a channel other than the frequencies or control channels, the LNK would flash momentarily. The alpha screen would go back and forth between programmed TGID and "Finding ContrlChan". My reception indicater would alternate between nothing and 1 and 2 bars of power.
**I do not think this is a reception problem, because when I hold on the control channel, I hear data and get 3-4 bars of power. It's just that when I hold on a voice channel on this system, I hear nothing. Let me just note though, that I also programmed the system in conventional mode to test it out (just the voice channels, I ignored the control channels) and the voice channels work. In conventional mode the scanner decoded the P-25 and I heard voice (signal was a bit spotty from my home in Berlin, but listenable).

** I also programmed the system as a MOT VHF TRS. I entered only control channels, the band plan, and all TGIDs. Interestingly enough when scanning the system in ID search I would hear data come across the control channel and see an unidentified talkgroup flash across the screen. I would also see where it usually has the modulation, a frequency. This frequency would change, but was usually in the lower 400's. I did not hear any voice, though.

So, I'm just wondering if I was on the right track somewhere.

The system isn't VHF or P25. It's a Motorola Type II SmartNet TRS with P25 digital voice.

Okay, so what does that go under? Mot Type 2 800 Standard, Mot Type 2 800 Splinter, Mot Type 2 900MHz, or something else?

None of those. The two 800 settings are for 800 MHz systems. What other options are there?

EDIT: MOT UHF.

The only other options under Mot Type 2 are UHF and VHF.

Who has a BC396t with this system programmed into their scanner? How did you do it?

It is programmed as a MOT UHF system. I believe your unit is set at CC only (default). You will need to enter the 3 frequency tables.

It's well worth the money to get even the basic version of Butel's ARC396. If you do that, I'll send you all of my MEM files for each of the active zones on the system.

Trust me, they encompass EVERYTHING... ;)

Thanks for your help, everyone. Well, it finally looks like I've got it now. I already have the West, Northwest and North systems programmed and ready to go. Unfortunately, the newer 396's don't come with software anymore  I was able to download a free trial version of ARC 396 which is how I organize my infor and program it to the scanner :)

Would you like my files, then? It will save you tons of time typing all the stuff from all the active zones...

Here you go. Don't forget to change the QuickKey settings of each system to what you want. The MEM file remembers the location of where it was assigned originally (large county systems like Burlington & Atlantic are up in the 40's & 50's on my 396, you might want them in the first ten spots, etc...).
