I live close to Springs CHP station but the reception is poor on all of my handheld scanners. Springs, Baldwin Park, East, West, South LA also sucks. The funny part is that i can recieve Santa Ana, Westminister, San Juan, Rancho Cucamonga and Riverside very well, without any static. Does anyone know why that is? I have about 15 different antennas and they are all great but i just cant pick up Southern Division without any static. Is their an antenna that can pick up those freqs clearly?? Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Lo band Hi band UHF or 800? If you are talking lo band the problem is you have a handheld scanner. Try hooking it up to a mag mount antenna or something of the sort.

I might suggest reading the narrative on the chp section of the frequency database.CHP uses a rather unique setup in broadcast. It all depends on which tower is actually transmitting to the cars in the area that determines signal strength to you. In my area i will hear one very strong signal from say 42.44 and then the very next from that same freq will be scratchy and hard to hear. CHP uses a voting system to determine which tower actually broadcasts the freq you are monitoring to the recieving car and that tower may be far enough away from you to produce poor results.

CHP Reception

Judas:

You'll need an outside antenna designed to receive low-band frequencies in order to experience decent reception on 42Mhz. My antenna is a Antenna Specialists MON-R31, which is now obsolete . . . but, the whip is still available. The whip can be used with a base adapter yielding good results on low-band. (Parts numbers below)

I'm located in southeast Long Beach and routinely receive mobile transmissions from Central L.A., Santa Fe Springs, West L.A., Baldwin Park, and occasionally Altadena and West Valley units. I receive the following CHP dispatch areas: L.A, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Santa Ana, San Bernardino, Indio, San Diego, El Centro, and Bakersfield. Oddly enough, my antenna is only 45' above ground, thus, I can only attribute that kind of reception to a good antenna. By the way, my elevation is sea level

You can buy the antenna and base adapter from Talley Electronics which is located in Santa Fe Springs, close to where you live. You can order online or over the counter. Google them on the web.

Avoid anything made by Radio Shack, it's junk. Buy good coax, not Radio Shack junk. Get good mounting hardware, not Radio Shack junk. Notice how the two words Radio Shack and junk are close together? That's not an accident. Whenever you think Radio Shack, think JUNK !

The whip: MON-33 MaxRad
Base Adapter: MBS MaxRad

Are you sure those transmitters aren't over-powering the radios somehow? Because the local base transmitters are pretty strong and actually, they aren't known for great audio... Quite a few are pretty over-driven to begin with. I can hear at least 6 different area repeaters around me on a hand held, no problem.

All L.A CHP such as Santa fe springs, South L.A, East L.A ....Run the 42.XX (no Repeat channel) and you need to add the second channel for the field units, you will need a outdoor antenna to here the Dispatcher, and forget about the field units unless they are very very close to you (even with a good outdoor antenna) you should here the Dispatcher pretty good.

The Orange county / Riverside / San Berdo / San Diego CHP All Run the Repeat 39.XX, channel (the second channel Repeats) (you don't need a second channel for the ground units) so you can here the Dispatcher and Field units with a Outdoor Antenna very very well, en fact I can pick up Westminster CHP (including the field units) with my hand held 396XT with the Radio Shack Telescope Antenna in my house, But can not pick up South L.A CHP at all and I live in Long Beach.

The word is that all the CHP Channels are having a major makeover and all CHP Channels will Repeat the 2 second channel next year, Stockton CHP is starting next month.

Good luck Robert

One more tad about L.A area CHP is there Repeater Location. try to monitor the Altadena CHP, As some times I can here the Ground units in my car here in Long Beach. Because there Repeater is High on a mountain, same with the Fort tejon/Buttonwillow CHP, As I can here the Ground units in my Big Rig when I'M in the Bakersfield area, because there Repeater is up High on the Grapevine.

I've been picking up the Altadena Office transmitting on the Brown 42.500 in a repeat mode at times. It is not continuous and reception varies quite a bit due to the voter. But I have been hearing units responding on the same frequency rather than on the input. Not sure if this is part of the new system being installed or something that has been in place. Just started noticing in the last few weeks.
