Is there a Windows program out there that will decode C4FM? Without an SDR.
I want to connect the audio output of my scanner to the laptop.
I have searched but cannot find one.
Thanks

  • DSD+ / DSD+ Fastlane: A widely used, robust digital decoder for Windows that supports various digital modes, including C4FM.
  • DSD-FME (Digital Speech Decoder - Florida Man Edition): A popular Linux-based fork of DSD that excels at decoding C4FM, DMR, and P25.
  • SDRangel: A comprehensive SDR software that includes built-in demodulators for C4FM, D-Star, and DMR, eliminating the need to pipe audio to a separate decoder.
  • OP25: A GNU Radio-based tool that handles C4FM modulation and YSF voice protocols.
  • Multipsk: A multi-mode software that can demodulate C4FM (voice and data).
  • SDRTrunk: Primarily for trunked radio, it supports decoding C4FM and CQPSK LSM Simulcast.

    Hope that helps

Speaker level? Probably not. But DSD+ will work with a discriminator tapped scanner.

Ok, which one of those will work with windows using the speaker or audio output of the scanner? I don't know how to do discriminator tap.

It's not likely any of them will work with speaker audio. Get an SDR, they are cheap and work well.

I know, i have one. But wanted to use this option instead. If there isn't one out there for sure, it is what it is.

Seems you “may” get this to work with very low bandwidth AM audio like ACARS (according to the wiki) but seems like a lot of trouble with not much payback.

Copy that. I did find an APRS program that works. Not much excitement there. I'm a ham 30 years, just now playing with digital since im retired.

I've had good luck with SDRTrunk and a pair of cheap USB Tuners - RTL-SDR Blog V4. Just one worked pretty well.

Not too awful to set up.

For a few dollars more the Airspy devices are significantly better.

Might be cheaper and easier than installing the tap on your scanner.

I believe op25 can do c4fm it from mic input, but I will say that is old and seldom-used code for analog input. Frankly for $35 you can buy a cheap RTL dongle and save yourself some headaches.

I have a SDR. I havent used it, i know i can, and learn it. But i wanted to find a windows program. Personal preference. Like i said before. If there isnt one...it is what it is. Part of doing different things in the hobby.

These programs need unfiltered raw audio and a speaker output has too much passband filtering and de-emphasis to allow the digital waveforms to pass without distortion. So that's why you need a discriminator tapped scanner. 15 years ago this would have been the way to decode DMR before it finally came to scanners.

If you have a ham rig with a 9600 baud output, that will work in lieu of a scanner with a tap. But as everyone else has said, there isn't much reason to go through this pain anymore when you could be online and decoding with an SDR stick in a few clicks.

Many of the programs listed above are Windows based... DSDPlus, Unitrunker, SDR#, SDR++, SDR Console, DSD-FME, SDRTrunk and others will all run natively on Windows.

If it were possible, there would be such a program and it would be popular. There is not. There's your answer.
